Considering the purchase of a Yaris

Hi guys, I'm thinking about purchasing a 2010 Yaris 3dr LB, manual, 19k miles. It's going for $11,495 and is in Carmine Red (maroonish color).

First off I'm not big on the color at all...hopefully some of you can change my mind with pictures of nicely modded Carmine Red cars ;)

Secondly I'd like to know of any issues to look out for. Anything in particular that I should check?

Lastly, I've always loved tiny cars, they're usually just a ton of fun. How is the Yaris for fun? Sure I want the great gas mileage and all, but would probably do some light modding to make it a little more fun. I'm under no illusions about making much more power from the little powerplant, but do these cars respond well to suspension/handling mods? I'd like something I could tear up and autocross with or just a twisty back road.

Thanks for the input guys!

The Yaris is GREAT fun. First things you want to do to get the most out of the handling are a rear sway bar and some lowering springs.

The only thing I would say to look for is whether or not there is pink spray under the hood when you prop it open. If there is.. the water pump needs replacing. That is IT.

^ what he said. 1st mod should be rear swaybar. MicroImage has UltraRacing 23mm and will ship that thing out to you pretty quick with all the appropriate hardware. All you need is sockets and torque wrench (or the hobo -pretty dang tight- method)

rear sway bar is a simple bolt on you don't need to jack up car or
remove wheels at all. maybe removing the passenger rear wheel will
help you tighten one of the bolts, but it is not needed.

but what a rear sway bar does to the Yaris is insane at how good it works

no matter what you read about modding the Yaris, the easiest and fastest
and most significant handling mod you can do is slap on a rear swaybar. After
that, you might not even want anything else. It really really improves handling and
makes the car far more fun to zip through exit ramps and corners.

springs and shocks also help, but is more work and more cost. if your goal
it to extract every last bit from a Yaris, a bunch of people here have done
all the mods needed to race them, and will have excellent advice.

thanks guys.

thinking that the Carmine Red might look interesting with a CF hood, rear spoiler, and some gold/bronze 16" wheels.

as for working on cars I've got tons of tools, etc... compared to working on my Bimmer (and before that a Mustang GT) this little thing will be no problem at all. I've been around the block MANY times with mods, engine & tranny swaps, tuning, suspension work, etc... and I think this little toy will be super simple to play with....which I like.

BMW is a pain in the a$$ to tinker with, not to mention expensive. Also I've always loved zippy little cars, they're just such a blast. Hoping to buy this thing and drive it for at least the next ten years, lol.

Yeah with a red car the best things you can do are black/bronze accents

The Carmine Red is one of my fav colors for the Yaris. There's a few pics of them in here somewhere.

As others have stated the rear sway is a must have. Some wider tires will help a lot too. As for fun, it's what the Yaris is all about and the main reason (besides mpg) it's become my main vehicle for driving.

thanks, was gonna do "TheStig" but felt that Captain Slow was more fitting ;)

took the car out for a spin tonight and what I find so funny is that even though I'm driving a Yaris I'm still five times faster than most people on the road. most people drive so friggin' slow, heh.

check out the track section of the forum. here is a link to my thread on my latest accomplishment: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36769

But thumb thru the rest, Jason@scca is a great person to talk to about what to do to handle on a track event.
