2018 Yaris GRMN Supercharged

Hi all just saw this article thought it might be interesting Toyota releasing a new 1.8liter supercharged engine to deliver over 210 hp on a six-speed manual transmission. Yaris GRMN(Gazoo racing masters of nürburgring) inspired by Wrc rally comeback for early 2018 in Europe hope I see them rolling in North America also.

If they bring it to Canada and it's under $28,000 it's a winner.

According to Car & Driver article:

"As we expected, the Europe-market Yaris GRMN with its 207 horsepower was a cruel tease for Americans. Our 2018 Yaris soldiers on with the 1.5-liter four-cylinder, which makes a wimpy 106 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. It’s connected to a five-speed manual transmission in the two-door L and a four-speed automatic transmission—yes, a four-speed—on every other trim."

Perhaps Canada will have more luck?

I'm highly doubtful this will ever step foot on NA soil. It would be quite a fun car for sure as it seems to have a 2zr as the engine. That said, if I was going to spend around 30 grand on a tuner type car, I don't know if I'd go with a Toyota. Strictly due to the lack of tunability with their ECU's and lack of aftermarket support. If Yota is making these cars rare and only doing a very limited production then there will be virtually no aftermarket support.

I'm not sure why 'Yota avoids bringing these to NA, I'm assuming they project poor sales as most people on this continent think of 'Yota as more of a super reliable family vehicle company

It could be, but if that was the case, then why would they bother to release cars like the FRS/BRZ/86 and tease cars to the likes of a Supra and MR2 successors?

'Yota needed Subie's help on the gt86 for it to ever become a realistic venture for them. The ecu is Subie's so it is easily tunable hence all the aftermarket support.

toyota is willing to put a decent effort in for one specific car geared for performance but when it comes to the rest of their fleet performance is barely an after thought. Its either a sports car or family vehicle, there seems to be no in between.

This may be changing with their new found born again rally interest, but I highly doubt we'll ever see a solely toyota built vehicle that allows the owner to tune and do extras to it. You either pay them extra to have it built for performance (if they give the option) or you buy a basic family vehicle it seems.

This is none of the reasons why their engines last so long but a lot of it also has to do with the fact thatbtheybare built well, look at how many tuners use the 2jz platform

The 1nz-fe is getting to the point like the old 2.0L folks engine. It's about time they design a new engine IMO

Toyota doesn't give a rat's ass about North America really. They continue to bring the bland vanilla-mobiles. I really have grown to like my 17 Camry XSE, but it is only the 4banger. I got to drive the 2gr version tho when the wife was looking to buy a couple months ago. Pisses me off even more that they didn't have any within 500 miles of the dealership I bought from in NC at the time in December. Now they have butchered the 18 Camry and still offer the stale 1nz in the Yaris apparently which is getting it's ass kicked in the mpg race now.
