A/C compressor knocking noise

Hi all,

I have a 2007 yaris hatchback, and the A/C compressor is making a knocking noise while driving (with a/c off or on) It looks like the pulley is wobbling. It also seems like something was attached to the side of it, but now it's missing (see pic) Any hope of getting replacment parts or do i have to shell out $600-$700 for a new compressor?

Also if i change the compressor what else do i need to change out?

Thanks.

Looks like a bolt or something came off, either way you're missing the black plate on the outside which I guess you could say is the "electronic clutch" although it is always spinning regardless of the compressor is on or not.

Get a reman'd compressor online or a used oem one. Much cheaper.

Just make sure you pull vacuum for an hour before you refill to get any moisture out of the lines. Do that and nothing else should have to be replaced.

Does the ac still work?

Yeah surprisingly it still works. I bypassed the compressor with a smaller belt, and the compressor pulley is very loose, I can wiggle it.

Should I replace the whole compressor or just the clutch. I found this on ebay.

I'm not sure how hard it is to pull off the existing clutch

I'd just repair the clutch, the oem compressors are reliable if used every week or so year round. No sense in scrapping a good compressor

My guess is you just slide it off (use a puller as it would be stuck)

Someone else who has experience with that compressor can chime in but it looks as if you'd just need a puller to remove the clutch since the outer plate already ripped off

Well that link looks right, but...

1. I'm missing the outer plate with the holes in it

2. my shaft is not in the shape of a 7mm bolt??? idk why, but if i zoom in on his pics it's shaped like a bolt. Probably requires a special tool.

Anyhow I ended up breaking clutch plate off (oops...) and there a appears no way to remove the remnants of the clutch plate without a way to hold the shaft.

Any chance a pulley can hook into the pulley and then when the pulley comes off whatever was left of the clutch will also come off.

Not sure how your clutch part came off, seems as if someone tampered with the bolt earlier in the cars life and never retorqued to spec

I'm pretty sure whatever is left of the clutch is screwed onto the shaft, and with no way to hold the shaft, it's not going to come off (or back on). I'm thinking i'm going to have to buy a whole compressor.

I haven't had trouble with my Yaris, but I replaced the one on my Echo a couple of years ago. I think it had a bolt or nut to get the clutch part off? and a snap ring to remove to get the pulley off, then I used a small three jaw puller to remove the pulley. Mine wasn't tore up, just getting loose and wobbly, so I just replaced the bearing and put it back on.

Just to follow up on this, I got my new denso ac compressor today and the shaft end is the same shape as a nut so you'd be able to hold the shaft with a socket. I think the original compressor you can not hold the shaft without a special tool.
