Haha. My wife points out that this potentially 'legendary patience' does not transfer to all aspects of my life.

One could also regard this as OCD, I suppose.

Yes, however slowly. Here is the beginning of the end cap fabrication. It looks pretty darn rough now, but with bondo, spot putty, I think I can make it look pretty good - well, acceptable anyway.

Open end before cap install.

Rough shaping before sanding and getting the contours as close as possible...

End cap attached. I used some 'super strong' gel super glue to attach the end cap. Then filled in behind with expanding foam. Still have to wait for the foam to dry before removing the screw and also have to fill the two holes. I'll drill and screw the end cap into the bumper after it's fully set. Then, do the body work.

I'll use a toolable and paintable caulk or seam sealer to close up the top crack where the lip meets the bumper

First rough bondo. Needs some serious shaping. Ran out of 80 grit and sliced my finger open with the utility knife, so will stop for a day or so.

Driver's side now. Expandable foam does a great job adhering the lip to the car. Will fabricate the end cap soon.

Final sanding tomorrow. Apply caulk along top. Prime, sand, base coat and clear coat.

Ongoing...

More shaping needed. This has proved to be very difficult restoring the lines and curves after bending, warping and screwing the lip to the car. I am optimistic that I can get a tight, seemless connection at the top. I'll be using 35 year acrylic caulk which is easy to work into a thin, straight bead with cloth and water.

At some point soon I'm just going to call it quits and sand and paint. I'm gaining more and more respect for autobody technicians by the day.

No doubt after all this labour I'll scrub a curb and the entire thing will blow into pieces.

Thanks man! I'm fighting the urge to paint. Of course, once I start spraying the base coat, every tiny imperfection will jump right out.

Caulking done and another layer of primer. One last round of spot putty, priming and block sanding and the base goes on.

First coat of paint. Will wet sand and repaint a couple more coats. I ordered two cans of SprayMax 2K Clear which I will apply in a few days. It should bring the ultra shiny glare down a bit and match the OEM paint better. The final effect will be acceptable. It looks good at a distance, not so great right up close.

Thanks very much, NYC-SE. "could do bodwork" is a relative term.

Looks great, from experience, no one looks as closely as the guy who made it ;)

I really like how it all comes together!

Thanks a lot!

Once I got prepped to clear coat the lip, I decided to do the whole bumper as it had a lot of dings and chips, so I set to it with bondo, spot putty and a lot of sanding. It turned out reasonably well, but I have to do some blending as the paint just slightly lighter than the factory even though it's color matched.

The SprayMax 2K clear is really amazing stuff. Such a deep gloss. It will be considerably glossier after it's cured and I wet sand and polish. I popped in a pic at the end of my tailgate. I was never quite happy with how dull it was with the standard spray can clear coat. This is only with two coats of clear.

Paint without clearcoat:

2 coats clear:

Liftgate. I still have to do the bumper with clear. I cut a major corner here and applied adhesion promoter over the badges too. They may peel. Either way, I've been pricing gear to set up a paint booth/compressor, paint gun etc. I am really leaning toward a full repaint of this car.

Bumper/Fender Paint Blending...

I had a fairly sharp cut off line so I sanded it all out with 180/320/600 then blended the bumper into the fender. Also fixed some scratches and small dings on the fender while at it. I'm quite impressed with the blend I got with spray cans. Not a bad spray pattern from the Duplicolor Perfect Match (a slight misnomer ) I'm clear coating soon. Will post more pics.

It's hard to tell with all the sun glare but the blend is almost unnoticeable. We'll see what happens with the 2K clear goes on.

SprayMax 2K Clear. If you spray this stuff... most importantly USE A RESPIRATOR, long sleeve shirt and nitrile or latex gloves! It can do very nasty things to your constitution!

First coat of clear. A bit matte but subsequent coats should bring that deep gloss SprayMax is known for.

Done. I had to rush the car into the garage as the wind started picking up and a fog bank was approaching. You can see it over the trees just to the left of the van. Thankfully it pulled back out to sea a bit before ruining my paint job. Sunny and calm one second, foggy and windy the next around here. I decided to paint outside because I don't really have adequate lighting and in some ways it makes sense to paint it out in the light as that's where it will live. Will post pics after it's dried and then after wet sanding and buffing.

Will post pics after wetsand and polish. Should really bring out the gloss.

Now...off to celebrate Mothers' Day with the fam.
