Angry Problem with Gearbox?

Hey guys.

Yesterday I noticed something ackward in my Yaris. When I am choosing 1st/2nd gear, I feel some vibrations from the stick, like it is scratching the inner walls of the transmission.Maybe it needs some oiling.I have manual transmission.

I will install my short shifter(when it arrives) to see if the problem comes from the OEM stick. It's pretty annoying!

before you install the shifter, take it to the dealer. Perhaps something is wrong that they need to fix. If you go in there with a short shifter they will say it caused the problem.

Today the problem is not as intense as yesterday.

Maybe my Yaris wants to persuade me not to be doing street racing!

to me it sounds like the cables of the shifter need to be lubed, toyotas use 2 cables to shift gears, when those become dry they can make some weird noises, just take it in to the dealer if you can and show them

the only thing I've noticed is that it's always somehow hard to engage the 1st gear as long as the car it's not completely immobilized

Some cars are worse than others. I think it has to do with the syncros trying to match the speed between shifts and since 1st gears ratio is 3.545 and 2nd is 1.904 there is a lot of speed to change.

Once you are moving there really is no reason to go back into first.

Well sometimes it is hard to engage 1st gear even if you have less than 5km/h.

if you're rolling slowly, blip the gas with the clutch in, and it will make it easier to put it back in 1st.

You still should never go back into 1st even at 5kp/h. If you still feel an overwhelming need to do so try putting the shifter back to 2nd to speed up the syncros then go into 1st.

There is nothing wrong with the transmission.

Of course I am never doing it, but I what I want to say is that in Yaris, the 1st gear should only be engaged if the car has come to a halt.

Funny thing happened on a short trip to the store a few minutes ago. I realized that when I have to slow down for a turn I push in the clutch begin to brake and put the shifter from 3rd to 1st at ~18mph then back into 2nd and release the clutch after I finish making the turn. I also found that when I was turning into the store that I actually put the car into 1st. I guess shifting is so second nature that I didn't even realize I was going back into 1st. LOFL

So much for my great words of wisdom.

Here's a STOP at every street corner. Two choices: completely stop the car and make the rear car going to flash you, or trying to slow the most and then restart - there's the trouble because is hard to restart in the 2nd gear so I had to put it in the 1st while still moving.

The 1.3lt engine model has a lot of torque and it isi easy to start on 2nd gear.
