It's largely cosmetic.

Correct. It has SOME sound insulation but that's about it. Removing the cover doesn't really do anything, no harm done. All the functioning parts are properly protected without the cover on their own.

It protects your eyes from looking at an ugly engine.

I had mine on my Echo and 2 of the plug holes somehow got filled with water(causing a misfire, yes I had dielectric grease on the plug boots). This is a somewhat common problem. Before i put in the 2zr, I had the cover off my 1nz for a couple years and never had any issue water or other wise.

That's kind of weird that the holes filled up. I would have thought any water that got down in there would just evaporate away as the coils and the valve cover/head get pretty hot.

Ya it was weird but I wasn't the first person to have that issue. I actually read about it a year before and then one day started experiencing misfiring. Read the codes, drove it home and when I pulled the coils 2 were full of water.

Strange thing is it wasn't raining that day or the day before. I blew out the water and re applied dielectric grease and never had that issue again
