New brakes/rotors - sounds like metal on metal rubbing - Toyota Yaris Forums

A few weeks ago I changed my front stock toyota brakes/rotors on my 07 yaris with premium semi-metallic and premium slotted rotors. I installed the shims on the brakes so I don't have squealing.

The problem I have is when I apply the brakes, I hear a metal on metal rubbing (no squeal) coming from the brakes/rotors. I've driven about 500 miles already, mostly highway driving.

What can I do to stop the metal on metal rubbing and have smooth braking without noise?

i think it had something to do with semi metallic pads...may last longer but annoying sound you may have...

I didn't have the problem with the toyota semi metallics, or does the toyota stock pads have some ancient japanese secret that kept them smooth and quiet?

Did you clean off the brake pads with Break Clean? Helps big time with quieting down pads until they break in.

What brand of pads? Some pads require a bedding in process. Other than that pull them apart and take a look, you might have dropped a tiny rock or piece of metal in while you were changing them.

Also, have you checked the rears? Sometimes the rears sound like they are coming from the front.

Yes, did this during the install. I also applied some red CRC disc brake quiet within the shims. What I didn't do is lightly sand down the surface of the rotor and pads.

Haven't checked the rears but it did sound like it was coming from the front.

did you apply brake grease to the pins and slide after cleaning them?

No I didn't. I moved them in and out without removing them and they seem to move pretty smooth. Should I do it anyways?

i do.. but its personal preference.. i ALWAYS do it for the customer.. worth the extra five mins for no comebacks. has been known to cause squealing and groaning if slightly less than stellar.
