first tank: 42 mpg

Just filled up my Yaris for the first time, and I was surprised to see that I got 42 mpg for the first tank, even though I was driving much faster (up to 65 mph highway) than I normally do (trying to vary the rpm during the first 600 miles on this new engine).

I've never had a new car before, but my understanding is that mileage should improve as the engine wears in. Can people tell me how much improvement I should expect?

Think I'll pull the plug on the AC next and then start driving more normally.

The rear-seat removal DIY is also tempting -- I only use my rear seat about twice a year, and even then it's usually not for people.

Yea, but it's still in there.. You get that much more space if you remove them..
Also, it cuts down on weight which boosts gas mileage.

I'd remove my rear seats if I had a place to put them..
