Can also add in the fact that it is now cold outside. Engine will be running higher rpms for a longer period of time until it warms up.

I think you've been around long enough to have seen past discussions on decreased fuel efficiency come this time of year.

Yup I'm dropping in MPG here as well. Hate HATE HATE winter gas =(

Was 42 / 44 MPG depending on how I drove. I have to be a light foot now to just squeak out 40MPG (and I moved to premium gas due to thinking that it might still be summer blend, no such luck)

Colder intake air = richer fuel mixture (created by the ECU).

The plus is more ponies, the minus is more green to Big Gas, Queens Park and Parliment Hill. Try to appreciate the 'more ponies'.

Winter can be hard on cars. The road salt and gravel on the finish. The sub zero starts. The drop in mileage doesn't help.

We've got winter gas here too, which doesn't make sense since our daily temps are still in the 70s...

You're likely squeezing the pedal slightly more than last winter.
Is your route identical? Traffic volume similar? Mod's the same as last fall?
Any number of things can effect your mileage.
And why is gas $1.074/L today? It was $1.05 the last time I was in need. And $1.01 the time before that.

there could be a dozen different reasons for the difference. Was a different type of gas legislated? Governments lately seem to enjoy playing with the gas formula. Is any of your cars fluids dirty? Did you buy new tires?

I assume you have some type of log, did you record specific weather and temperatures?

Did you add or subtract any mods?

The gas could also be containing more ethanol than last year. Remember, most pumps say "Contains UP TO 10% Ethanol". So maybe they have 10% this year and only had 5% last year.

That very much could be the case? It would be nice to find out who the distributor that gas stations buy from? I'm sure there are different % of ethanol from distributors. I know the gas station I use gets their gas from a reseller, Myers Oil, State College, PA who in return gets it from a distributor via the Altoona, PA pipeline. I asked and they don't know what the percentage of ethanol is contained in the mixture. Really how could you determine? I think you can't...

Any rate, the local mom and pop station still has some non-ethanol only 93 octane gas left. It will be gone by the end of the month...

Winter sucks and the gas too! At least, there will be the enjoyment of the upcoming Ski season...

Cheers!

I Love my YARIS - (Click below to see Gaslog):

Most miles Tank: 538 tank/10.148 gal = 53.015 MPG / Most MPG: 54.95 MPG (ethanol) 425 tank/7.73 gal
