DIY Variable Speed wiper stalk install

This was originally posted by Violin but was lost after the hack. Here is what I could find off of the google cache. Thanks Violin!

With the wheels straight ahead, put a piece of tape with a line drawn on it to mark the center position of the steering wheel.

DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE and go surf internet porn or something. I wait at least 5 minutes to be sure that the airbag is safely asleep.

Use a #30 torx wrench and remove the bolts at the back of the steering wheel. They won’t come out; just loosen them all the way.

Pull the airbag.

Unplug the horn wire, pop up the little yellow tabs on the airbag plugs and remove them.

Set the airbag aside with the Toyota emblem facing up.

Remove the center nut from the steering wheel.

Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel and set it aside.

Remove the three screws holding the cowling in place and pop it apart.

Unplug the two connectors on the wiper stalk.

Depress the clip holding the wiper stalk in place and remove it.

Install the new wiper stalk so that it clicks into place.

Plug the two connectors into the new stalk.

Reattach the cowling.

Wind this center spiral cable counterclockwise all the way until it won’t turn any more. Turn it back clockwise 2.5 turns and align the marks at the bottom.

Put the steering wheel back on and align your tape marks.

Reinstall the center nut.

Plug in the airbag and horn.

Tighten the torx screws in the back and you’re done!

The variable speed front works but the intermittent rear won’t without additional wiring.

Total elapsed time: 30 minutes including taking photos.

Thanks Violin..... I wanted to get this reposted before it disappeared from google cache...DanQ
