Can't get new drums to go over new shoes?

Went to put new brake drums and shoes on my yaris today and when I got the new shoes installed he drums won't go back on and the adjuster is all the way in. The parts are identical to the old parts. What am I doing wrong? How do I go about fixing this issue?

Make sure the wheel cylinders aren't frozen, carefully push each piston in, as you do this the other piston should move out. If it does that, then they should be ok.
Are there different size shoes? If so, the big ones go on the back.
Parking brake stuck on?
Sometimes you have to move the shoes up or down a little to get them on the center so the drum will slide on.

Have you ground the lip off the drum before you try refitting. I always do this to make sure the drum has a good start at sliding onto the shoes. And dubble check all the adjustment is off of your handbrake cable and that the cable moves freely on both sides as these can seize up. Also like the other member said in the previous reply have you compared the shoes your new ones to the old ones. There are so many little differences with these cars!

Haven't thought of the handbrake cable. I tightened it up a bit up under the center console about 6 months ago. Would this be causing any problems? And my wheel cylinders are free btw and the parts are 100% identical other than old parts worn out.

We'll need some good pictures if you haven't figured it out yet.

Just putting this out there. Since you were able to slide one drum on after slacking handbrake but not the other, then the cable may be seized on the one side.

So guys I feel kinda stupid haha I had a toyota mechanic come by and help me. Turns out that the shoes are different than the old ones! Compared side by side the new ones were about a 1/4 inch longer than the old shoes which is why they wouldn't fit. All the holes and mounts look exactly the same but longer shoes. Is there different shoes for differnt model yaris's?

You know I was looking on one of the parts places for brake parts for my sisters Yaris and I'm sure there were at least 2 different options as far as drums and shoes go. I think there are 3 different options for front discs and pads. I just measured the old ones to find the right brake hardware for mine.

In the UK we had French and Jap Yaris's and various engine sizes so its no wonder we had different brake options.

One more problem now guys. I had to replace a few wheel studs because previous garage impacted my lug nuts on VERY tight. Twist off 3 of 4 on one side. Can't get the new lugs to go in straight. What do I do now?

They are supposed to be in there very tight, you just need to get them started. If you can't the only thing i can think of is pulling the assembly off the car and taking them somewhere to get installed or getting a used hub/knuckle with studs from a scrap yard.

Using a lug nut, conical side out, to draw them in tight they should self align.

You know i never thought of that. Certainly sounds easier than bashing them with a hammer and a case of crushed fingers. 😂

Only had lug nuts with the closed end but used a couple washers to keep the lug nut straight and used a ratchet to tighten them in. All studs straight and seated in perfect!

Now how do I adjust the rear brakes properly? Tighten them till I can't move the drum by hand and back them off 2-3 turns?
