Custom exhaust Q's

I did a quick search and came up with mixed opinions and tons of options. So, here goes with a few basic questions...

Pipe diameter. If one is looking to keep things simple and stay NA, what is the best choice for pipe diameter? My gut tells me 2" and apparently a couple people agree.

Resonators. If one does indeed go with 2" piping, is a resonator required to keep the noise below "legal" (And I use that term loosely as most cops simply use their own discretion) and bearable limits? I'd like to avoid it for several reasons.

Mufflers. I was looking at this muffler. My wife used this muffler on her Acura with great results in both sound and performance. Anyone have any experience with Magnaflow mufflers on their Yaris?

There aren't many members here with custom exhausts, so that is probably why you're seeing a lack of responses. IMO 2" piping for an N/A setup sounds about right and Magnaflow components are always nice, so you can't go wrong.

Cool, thanx man :)

How about ditching the resonator?

The Magnaflow doesn't allow for a silencer of any type (I don't believe in using those anyway), and while I don't want it to be excessively loud, I'd like to avoid a resonator if possible.

I only know of one person that has gone straight through on their exhaust, and from what he told me it was LOUD. Like, uber loud. Now, myself... I don't mind it. Some do. IDK, that is your call. I'm not afraid of no cops!

Not sure if this is what you mean by straight through, but I wouldn't be cat-less if that makes a difference...

As long as it doesn't drone, I wouldn't really mind a good noise.

Then again, I suppose I could simply stick with the stock exhaust and replace the resonator with a 1.75"-2" straight section. Probably won't net much in terms of power, but the main reason I'm trying to get rid of/avoid using one is its usually the simplest place to knock off 15-20lbs.

Personally, I'll take weight savings over [miniscule] power gains any day of the week.

I have a custom magnaflo. I would recommend leaving the resonator as it is going to be way loud without it. I am running a more traditional offset inlet/outlet type muffler than the one you're thinking about. I'm not sure what model it is but it hangs down a little and I don't like the look. On top of that, the drone at highway speed is terrible. I've actually been thinking of switching to another exhaust. Before I do that though, I think I'm going to sound insulate the floor pan. It seems part of the problem with the noise is that there is no sound insulation at all, just bare metal from the rear seats all the way back. It's like a dam tin can back there and I'm sure the lack of insulation is 3/4 of the problem with the noise resonating through the car.

Thanx for the info :)

I thought I was crazy for insulating the spare tire well in my old car. Glad someone else has done the same thing to deaden noise ;)

More, more :)

I'm about to put on a custom exhaust piece to connect my Megan header and Blitz axle-back. Do you think leaving off a resonator would make the exhaust raspy?

Here are a couple youtube videos of some different exhausts if this will help. Violin on here has tried some different ones out.

Raspy? We'll, at WOT, yes. That's usually when any exhaust sounds raspy. But at normal cruising spped, where you'll be 90% of the time, the noise is going to be obnoxious with a straight through muffler. You should really leave that resonator. It's basically like a mini muffler. If you think the resonator is going to decrease flow to the rest of your system, get an aftermarket resonater that is longer than the stock resonator. This will decrease exhaust noise when cruising even more than the stockie but will give a nice raspy note on WOT. Heck even without a Megan header and having the stock resonator, my magnaflo sounds raspy when pulling hard up a hill at WOT. For some reason that extra load on the engine makes the raspyness come out.

Raspy = Bad

I'd rather not sound like a poorly tuned Honda if I can help it. I'd like it a little louder tho.

my piping is large in preperation for a supercharger that will be comming later...2" cat back for a mildly tuned N/A application is good.

I removed the resonator completely and no rasp...i am using a Borla Stainless Turbo Muffler...very deep tone, and even with my excessively large pipe i havent had HP loss (2.5" cat back).

be carefull about pulling the resonator with other exhausts...with alot of the mufflers out there sound like ass without a resonator...if i had something to capture audio clip with i would...

the tone is very deep, no rasp or "wing" sound to it, no fart or trumpet sound...best tone i could find for a 4 cyl application.

be forwarned...while they sound good, flow better, and are stainless...the borlas arent cheap...they start at over 100 bucks.

I have a fairly inexpensive muffler and nice looking tip (see my garage). It was just above stock in terms of sound yet was much more free flowing. I wanted to have just a bit more noise so removed the resonator and replaced with straight pipe. I really like the sound, not too loud but certainly audible without sounding ricey. With my 5 speed going through the gears, it sounds great and has a peformance tone to it.

I just put a custom Cat back System on my 2007 Yars S Sedan
2 inch piping from the resonator all the way back to the Magnaflow Mufler.
I put a Magnaflow Muffler on it. left the resanator because we tried it with out it, and it was anoying driving down the road. PLus the resanator has a good flow threw it I loked not at all bad for such a small engine. I put it back on and the
2" piping with a magnaflow sounds great!
No rasp, no fart, no crappy oval honda exaust sound, none.
And the power gain was noticable. A little but with inatake, pully and Exaust, I cant wait!!
So go 2" piping from resanator back...Thro a Magnaflow On.
You will have a great sounding car. Sounds awsome trust me. Not too loud but people look to see what kind of car it is, not cause its loud cause it sound so klean...Fukkk those rice oval exaust.
Sounds Good trust me, I love it, and driving down the freeway at 80 isnt going to give you a eadheach, thats what I didnt whant. Hope it help, bye
