Smile Small science fiction story I wrote which includes the Yaris. :)

Just decided to sit down and start writing . :)
If anyone finds it interesting, let me know so I will continue with the idea.

*** Over the rainbow ***

Bob is a 28 year old guy who lived alone in a small room in north/eastern Los Angeles. He wears glasses, has blond hair and is of fair complexion. Bob is usually calm. He speaks softly and somewhat slowly. He is somewhat of a thoughtful guy. Any single observation, can occupy his mind for a substantial period of time, like a whole evening.

On a Saturday morning, the day when he was off work, Bob woke up unexpectedly. He sat up on his small bed and tried to think why he woke up. Then he realized that there are absolutely no sounds coming from the outside through an open window. He thought at 4:30 am it’s not unusual as people were just sleeping, but he noticed that there was no lights in or around the houses situated over the hill he could see through his window.

He then realized there was no electricity when he noticed that the notebook had a battery light on when he turned it on. When computer booted up, Bob discovered that there was no internet connection either.

In few minutes he walked into the kitchen and noticed that everything is quiet and dark in the house as well. Bob had used an LED flashlight to shine around the house. The house has 9 rooms on three floors with at least 9 occupants residing in it. There are usually people cooking and making noises early in the morning, but not today.

After returning to the room and lying in bed for 30 minutes or so, Bob decided to walk outside to look at the car and check out what’s going. The street was quiet and empty. The sun was close to sunrise so the eastern part of the sky became reddish in color. What struck Bob as especially strange is the fact that even on the street, there was dead and complete silence. He noticed that even birds could not be heard.

Bob went back to the house and ate an apple, some bread, and some watermelon. Since there was no electricity, and he could not get online, he decided to ride his bicycle to Alhambra, a small residential town few kilometers to the East.
Passing by the university campus and residence halls, he again realized that he hadn’t seen a single person this morning. There were no sounds and there was no one in sight.

Bob thought to himself that it’s just early and people were sleeping, but he couldn’t help but wonder why there were no cars around as there usually are in Los Angeles. He rode his bike closer to the freeway overpass hoping to see cars there, but! He was stunned that the freeway had cars, but they were not moving! Approximately a dozen of cars were scattered along the shoulder and the median. Some cars were visibly damaged and apparently crashed into either trees or the freeway median barrier.

Bob became afraid. He looked around and tried to smell the air thinking of the nuclear or chemical attack. He immediately covered his nose with the sleeve of his jersey and headed towards the main street and the city hall/police station. When he approached the main road, he became very concerned and seriously fearful as he saw many cars scattered around the street. Many had also been wracked against telephone poles, trees, and other cars.

He got off his bike near a white Toyota Yaris that was sitting with front wheels on the curb after apparently hitting and jumping over the curb. Bob knew he had to look inside but at the same time he was afraid to see what happened to the driver. When he approached the car and looked through the window, to his surprise he discovered that there was no one inside. He then looked into 3 other cars that were near by, one of which was apparently wracked into a lightning pole. All cars he looked inside of were empty!

Bob sat down on the curb and closed his eyes. He was trying to think what was happening and whether this was a reality and not some dream. He pinched his leg and felt the pain. He shook his head and looked around, just to see the same picture, empty and quiet streets with empty, wracked cars. Bob realized that the skin on his face and head was contracting and that he had goose bumps over his back.

He was franticly imagining scenarios that would naturally explain the surrounding situation – like some city planned evacuation drill, but he quickly realized that crashed cars could not be a part of planned activities and something was seriously wrong.
