Yes, I tried everything I could think of.
I tried putting the gear into N or R for a few seconds before putting into R also, and even tried putting into P and turn off the engine for a few hours too.

Maybe this is something to do with ABS that became standard on LB from 2009...
My '07 LB w/ automatic transmission had ABS and EBD and did not make this clunk sound like my '09 LB does. My '09 also has ABS and EBD.

yes , they could be hanging up . They may need to get seated better . We had that issue with a new '03 MATRIX . Overtime the noise went away , we figure from wear on the pads . We also test drove 3 or 4 new '03 PONTIAC Vibes ( Matrix ) and they all did the same thing ( the MATRIX didn't at 1st , appeared not long after purchase ) . You may want to take it dealer and have it looked at , is free under warranty .

Just FYI for the to be '09 owners.
After 2 weeks, it made noise only sometimes.
After 3 weeks, it stopped making any noise.

This seems to be correct. It's been over a month now since I brought my '09 5-door LB home from the dealer and I don't hear that klunk noise anymore or I may have just gotten used to it.

I have heard it about 3 or 4 times in the 2 weeks that I have had the car.
