I have 2009 5-Door LB and it makes that noise once too when I put the transmission to reverse.
I reverse into parking lot, so I only hear it once when I try to backup park my car.

So, when I drive, I start from D, drive like 10 miles, then reverse to park my car, then it makes that noise once. If I go forward one more time and reverse, it won't make that noise. I guess it's not a problem since it's happening to many people, it seems like.

my xA has done that from day 1.. it's not a clunk as much as it is a "boing" but correct me if you dont' hear a boing noise.

i had a focus group with fellow xA owners back in 2005 and i actually spoke to the designer of the xA (via translator) and asked him what the noise was (even took him for a ride) and no one could tell me what it is.. i personally think it's the E-brake somehow releasing line tension in reverse... do you apply your parking brake when you stop?

(i just had a parts focus group here) and found an old TSB#TC005-07 which is for a rattle noise while in reverse. not sure if its your problem because you describe a clunk noise but its worth a try.....

This is happening to me too. Is it something that I need to worry about?

This is normal. All the cars I've driven in the past, manual and auto, has had this noise. I used to know what caused this when I remembered how transmission worked, but I don't remember anymore.

I never heard these noises in my '07 LB, my brother's Corolla, my Mom's 4Runner, my Dad's Hyundai Sonata or my sister's Hyundai Accent.

I owned 5 cars before Yaris (2 auto, 2 manual, and 1 CVT), but Yaris is the only car that made this noise.
I hope the noise goes away someday.

I heard the clunking noise on the '88 civic manual (especially loud), '88 legend auto, '90 accord auto. Maybe it was normal on older cars?

ive not worried about it though, figured it might be nothing or not that unusal. it ONLY happens when going into reverse after starting the car.
Mine had the Klunk the first 8 months I had my 07. I drive a M/T 07 LB. I took it to the dealership and they thought I was hearing things, of course it would not make the noise when I was there, now, almost 2 yrs later, I never hear it. I figured it just went away, like it was part of the break in dilly.

Maybe it got lost from the hack

I was paying attention to when it makes the clunk noise.
When the car just starts, no clunk when I shift from P to R.
After driving 10 miles, shift from D to R makes clunk noise.
Even if I shift to N and wait a few secs and then shift to R, it still makes clunk noise.
After that one time clunk, it won't clunk again until I drive another 10 miles or so.
If I drive for over 30 miles at once, it won't clunk from shifting D to R.
Weird.

When I first turn on the car and go into reverse to back out of my garage, I hear the clunk. Then after backing out of my garage, when I put it into drive I hear the clunk.

I hear the clunk anytime I put it into drive or reverse after it has been sitting for awhile like when getting into it after work, getting into it after being at the mall for a couple of hours, in the morning when I leave for work.

I found that post.
http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...ight=abs+reset

The noise is very much like this poster in the above link described.
It sometimes is louder than other times like he said too.
But the difference is, mine does not make the noise when the car is started.
It only makes the noise after I drive it for a while.
It, so far, made the noise 100% of the time after I drive it for 10 miles.

As IsLNdbOi said his 2007 LB didn't make this noise but his 2009 LB does, my friend's 2007 LB with auto trans and no ABS does not make this noise.
Maybe it's something to do with ABS.
Mayeb only the ones with auto trans and ABS makes this noise.
I don't know... but the noise is loud enough to bother me.

I am going to the dealership on Saturday about this issue (I drive an '07LB).

Should I print out this post for reference? I just don't want them to think that I am hearing things. Just to show that it is not just my car.

Wish you good luck with it.
Did you have this noise since you got the car or did it start just recently?
Do you have ABS on your car?

Showing them this thread might be a good idea.
I would think any additional information will be more help for them.

Mine will be hard to show to the technician since it doesn't make noise if I drive 5 miles or less. It makes noise when I drive 8+ miles.

My wife bought 2009 Yaris 5-Door LB too.
It makes exactly the same noise as mine.
She noticed the noise too and asked me if it's ok.
I told her it's ok because mine makes the same noise too

I know my friend's 2007 Yaris LB didn't make this noise.
Maybe this is something to do with ABS that became standard on LB from 2009...

Are you holding the brake all the way down before you shift?
