As it currently sits, there are only a couple of oil producing countries that can still make a per barrel profit, while many more are facing serious economic hardships as their profit points are north of $75-$100 per barrel.
Heard our Lt. Governor elect interviewed on his radio station today. We passed Proposition 1 on the November ballot. This will divert half of the money that goes to our ESF/Rainy Day Fund (current balance is 8 billion plus...more than the other 49 states combined.....comes from taxes/fees generated from oil production) for land, construction, and maintenance of new non toll road projects. He doesn't think the projections for Year 1 will be off, but he thinks that due to the current decline in oil prices, there will be $300-400 million USD less available for Year 2. He also said that they are waiting for certain reports that will give them a better idea how much less sales tax revenue will be generated. Budget projections must be done for 2-year periods (out legislative bodies only meet every other year). He said capital equipment in the oil business generates a lot of sales tax revenue, and it is unknown how much that will decrease.

I just paid $ 1.64 9/10 USD per U.S. gallon at a different Kroger (in Tomball, a town adjacent to Cypress, where I got my last two fill ups). This = 5 cents per gallon less then my last fill up. In addition to being less, it is the cheapest price in our metro. My last/prior fill-up = 6.9 cents per gallon above the then cheapest $1.63 per gallon. It will be interesting to see if future samples indicate a temporary bottom. The outside temperature while driving on the last tank of gas was easily below the previous tank..and my fuel economy dipped a bit.

$2.79 in Northern Maine for 91/93. This pains me because the car is currently on blocks and because it is winter.

$2.33 in Scarsdale NY 1 hour ago. Lowest I've seen it in a long time. I don't know how that station sells it so cheap. He is consistently 20 cents cheaper than the surrounding stations.

I would bet the reason its cheaper would induce you not to put his gas in your car, were you to know it.

Saw $1.99 here last pm!

. Around our metro I notice wide price swings among stations in close proximity to areas with the highest demographics (River Oaks, the Memorial Villages, Tanglewood, etc).

I've been using his gas for over a year in another car and have had no problems. I don't think he's selling bad quality stuff. MPGs are good and like I said no problems. Honestly I think he may be scamming on taxes or something. His cigarettes are way too cheap also.

Right it could be perfectly OK.

Years ago I went to the cheap gas station for my VW Beetle. I did this for many many years. I would NEVER put Exxon or Texaco or brand name gas in my VW. No Sir!

Then one day at the cheap gas station I got two quarts of rusty water in my VW and it came to a stop about half a mile from the station. I was very handy and suspected I got water because my VW ran PERFECTLY and I did all the work myself. I had tools in the car (and you didn't need many tools to work on cars in those days) got the tank out of the car and drained the rusty water out and went on my way. But I never went back to that station and warned all my friends.

But did I learn my lesson....no I did not! I bought cheap gas all the time until once in Paramaus NJ I got gas that made my Subaru smell like rotten eggs. Really bad too!

After that I figured no more cheap gas for me. Cars are too expensive and too hard to work on today and I am too old besides.

I'll tell you some more things I do while Im on the subject. I don't drive much (5000 miles a year) and I only use half a tank every two weeks or so. But I fill up at four bars cause you don't want condensation in the tank which is what youll get driving around with an empty tank.

Also being a private pilot you don't leave gas tanks half full or trust the gas gauge because again of condensation and you don't want to run out of gas because then you might have an expensive landing. Also, unlike with a car you test the gas in your airplane for water and many times you find it in there. Remember when the water made my VW stop? Well if the engine stops on takeoff you can crash. Airplanes are very light (1500 lbs) and hold 20+ gallons of gas. In a crash the fuel tanks can rupture coating you your passengers and the structure with gas that likely ignites incinerating everyone and everything.

Which you don't want!

Apparently, the price here hasn't plateaued. It is still decreasing. The lowest price in our metro for the first hours of Saturday January 10th = two stations a few blocks apart...on either side of SH 249 in Tomball...One a Murphy Express and one at Wal-Mart (also operated by Murphy Oil). Both = $ 1.55 9/10 USD per U.S. gallon...9 cents per gallon less than the cheapest on January 5th. Today, that Wal-Mart has fallen off the chart, but that Murphy Express is the 3rd cheapest in the metro at a lower $ 1.52 9/10 USD per U.S. gallon. Two stations are tied for the cheapest in our metro at $ 1.49 9/10 USD per U.S. gallon (6 cents per gallon less than the cheapest was 2 days ago, and 15 cents per gallon less than the cheapest was a week ago)....a Valero on the other side of the metro near Hobby Airport, and a Stripes (cash price only) a few blocks away from the aforementioned Wal-Mart and Murphy Express.
