Amp And Cable Kit Question

Okay, I have an 8-gauge cable kit installed already powering an Alpine MRP-M450 amp going to my 10" Alpine Type R sub. The RMS on this amp is only 220w (at 4 ohms). My friend has an Insignia amp laying around brand new (he hasn't had the time to put it in his car). It's peak is 1000w and I don't know the RMS. I was wondering if I can put that amp into my car without changing anything (borrowing until he puts it into his car). I will turn the gains down to minimum on that Insignia amp if I can do this swap. Does anyone know if I can, or would I have to upgrade to a 4-gauge kit (if that's so, I'm not). TIA.

hmmm, I googled "Insignia amp 1000w", and took a look at a couple of hits. If my friend's amp is that same one found in the search, it actually pushes out less RMS wattage than the Alpine amp I already have. booo...

Your alpine amp would still be a better bet imo insignias are garbage from my experience with them. The type r is a dual voice coil sub have you tried wiring it at 2 ohms? That should give it close to the 500 watts it needs if I'm not mistaken.

I always do 4 gauge. Its always better to have to much power then not enough. Plus you can use it on any amp. I think most amps now nicely accommodate 4 gauge wire without any wire tricks like I use to do back in the day.

It's the 1042 model. I just remember hooking it up to the setting that creates more power. I can't remember if that's 2 or 4 ohms. I'm thinking 4 since it's the 1042.

My Alpine amp barely can fit the 8 gauge

8 gauge is fine if your running under 500 watts. Im familiar with the amp, it should put out around 400 watts when wired at 2 ohms and bridged so that would be your best bet if you have it wired to 4. See diagram below. This is for a single 4 ohm DVC sub which im pretty sure that model is. If its its a 2 ohm DVC let me know. If you have any questions if I end up going to the Micro Image meet I can help ya out there if you go.

Thanks. It's been a while since I looked at the sub, but I believe there were two pairs of plugs like so: oooo

I think the manual said if it is compatible with the amp, wire it so that the first plugs with the third, and the second with the fourth. I thought the MRP-M450 amp was a monochannel, and not a multi-channel?

Oh yeah my bad was thinking of wrong one it is a mono. Well regardless you should be getting close to 400 watts or more if wired that way. Positive to postive, negative to negative. If the sub isnt still perfoming like you want if your running a sealed box id look into getting a ported one. I personally think the type r sounds alot better ported. Gets all that extra air trapped inside out for more bass.

*sigh* nowhere near the 1500w max RMS capability. I'd love a 1000w RMS amp.

Yeah, my bad about thinking it was wired to 4 ohms. The model made me think I did it that way, but yeah, I did wire it to 2 ohms. I want a better amp, but I really don't want to redo the cable. I guess I can always get a vented/ported box instead of my eBay sealed box.
