Compressor has two wires - one ground, one 12v. The 12v wire connects to a relay.
The relay has 4 wires - one ground, one that connects to the compressor, one 12v to battery and the last wire connects to the pressure switch on the tank. When the tank drops to a certain psi, the pressure switch sends a signal to the relay which triggers the compressor to turn on. You probably don't need a relay, you can hook up a manual switch and turn it on whenever your tank runs low. However, you'll need a gauge to monitor how much psi is in your tank so you know when to manually turn the compressor on and, most importantly, know when to turn it OFF so you don't overfill the tank beyond its holding limit. Don't forget to add a fuse in between the battery and the manual switch just in case. |

Thanks yarisugi, but I meant more like which wires he used in the car to wire the comp up. I know how to wire it up just not sure where I should pull the power from. Because if I hook straight up to the battery wouldn,t the compressor run anytime the tank is low whether the engine is on or not? Thats what I gathered. So i figured I'd run it off of a wire that gave power only when the ignition was on. I was worried more about current draw and that kinda thing.

The pressure switch has two terminals - one to connect to the relay, the other to accessory wire of car. When the tank is low, the pressure switch will trigger only when your key turned to accessory, like when you want to listen to the radio without the engine running. You could connect that terminal to the ignition to allow the switch to go on only when you start the car. There shouldn't be much draw.
What's your set up? Maybe I or 808_Yaris can help you from there. |
