1ZZ throttle - Not Optimized Yet!

Well, just finished the 1ZZ install without a hitch. No cel! The problem I saw when I installed the throttle body was the manifold has a opening which is too small and restricts the airflow. To really take advantage of the new throttle body, I think we need a newly designed intake manifold. Any thoughts??

In addition, what intake system are people using with the new throttle body? Perhaps something designed for the 1.8 liter TS or even a Matrix intake?

yah someone had a prototype but i guess decided to cancel the project..*sigh* too bad.. 15-20 hp increase for under $700 sounds very reasonable.

^yeah, but garm is picking it back up

To the OP, if you feel comfortable, you can port match the intake manifold, it just wont fit the stock TB with its gasket after you do this

It's picked up. DynaTek is interested, and I already have a backup fabricator if they fail to come through again. However, the intake manifold project was based on using a stock throttle body. If we limit it to throttle body swaps, it might mean not enough sales to do the manifolds. And I'm not doing a bunch of versions, so let that be known.

As long as the new intake manifold is made out of metal and it is thick enough, it can be bored out. This will avoid the strange 90 degree lip where the throttle body connects to the intake manifold. Even more gains!

As long as there is a will, we will find a way!

I'm pretty sure the plastic one can be bored out. Use a dremel tool or something. I was actually thinking of doing this soon but i messed up my manifold so i'm looking for a stock manifold to buy. hahaha

About nine years ago, I had a Ford Focus and bought a larger throttle body for it. I port matched the intake manifold, and it was made out of plastic. I just stuffed a rag down into the manifold and used a Dremel and a vacuum to suck out the bits. Worked very well. I'd try the 1ZZ-FE TB, but would make sure to bore out the manifold. Otherwise, it's just bottle necking the airflow.

People who have done the throttle body mod report more power. Port matching would do even more.

Frown, I'm not saying I won't do it, but it will be dependent on interest, how many people want to go the whole way with intake mani + larger TB.

I would be interested, already planning on swapping the throttle body as my next project. I don't know how much something like an intake manifold costs, but it sounds useful.

Yeah, well the "butt dyno"is a bit subjective until a real dyno run is done. Throttle response is one thing ...

I've swapped mine, Garm, but I'll go with whatever you produce and mod it if necessary.

Thanks for picking the ball back up on this. I think it will make significant gains.

The butt dyno IS subjective, that is true. But when someone like Jkuchta, whose racing and technical expertise surpasses my own, says it makes a difference, I'll take that as being true.

Hey Garm, when can we expect to see the production pieces done assuming DynaTek does pick up the production for the intake? I'm not sure you mentioned this in the intake thread. I'll take whatever you make!!

I'm not sure, but I'm having a phone conversation with DynaTek again tomorrow.
