Brake lights stay on

The brake lights in my girlfriend's 2007 Toyota Yaris stay on even when the brake pedal is not engaged and the parking brake is completely pressed down. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look at before we take it to the dealership? There is no warranty remaining on the car so if I can fix it myself it would be ideal. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Chck the switch that the brake pedal engages behind the dash. YOu have to really look up from the floor of the car to see it, or you can open up some of the panels to look for it, for instance the one directly beneath the steering wheel. it might be sticky/stuck

I will give that a shot. Thanks for the reply. Is there something in particular with the switch that I am looking for?

Pull the connector on the brake switch and if the lights go off, then the switch is bad.
