Should I get my first oil/filter change on my way back to TX, or wait until 5k ?

Should I get my first oil and filter change on my way back to Texas (at 1,000 miles on the odometer), or should I do the first oil/filter change at 5,000 miles ?

1000 is really early for the first one, especially if you don't drive it hard on the way home. I personally would wait until 3000-3500.

I honestly it's not the first oil change that will determine if you can make it to 300k miles or not as long as you do your maintenance according to your driving style/recommended maintenance.

Thanks, CTScott and IllusionX! I've sometimes heard 500, 600, 1,000, or 1,250 miles. I've always wondered if that range = a myth or not. With my 2007, I had planned to park it at a relative's house in Alpharetta, GA, travel to California and back with them for Thanksgiving, and then resume my trip from Alpharetta after Thanksgiving. However, when I finally reached someone at the California DMV help line () I was told that I had to do the registration in person. After obtaining this information (which turned out to be wrong ), I high-tailed it back to California...not stopping at a Toyota dealer. I did get the first oil change done at a Toyota dealer in California (soon after I returned), but I'd already put 10,000 miles on my blue Yaris . CTScott, if I do the first change at 3,000-3,500 do I need to to the next one at 5,000, or can I wait until 10,000 miles ? After that, If I followed what many members seem to do , I'd change at 15,000 - 20,000 - 25,000 -30,000 etc.

In the old days when engines were machined with less precision it was necessary to wear a new engine in. With the precision of machining and the factory break-in that is done on new engines this is really not necessary. The process to do so used to actually documented in the owners manual.

Thanks! Then I'll probably do 3,500 and then again at 10,000. My blue Yaris (with only 20 oil changes, IIRC) has finally started to burn oil. From roughly 274k to 288k it burned 2 1/2 quarts . Some of those miles included parts of two days on I-5/CA-58/I-15/I-40/US-93/I-10 in California on two of the hottest days ever recorded for those month/numerical date combinations....and then driving through AZ, NM, and TX from El Paso through DFW to Tyler. I added 2 quarts, and then from roughly 288k to 292k, the 2007 only burned 1/4 of a quart.

except that info is useless for new cars, because the engines are already broken in at the factory.

nookandcrannycar, just drive the car like normal. Get the oil changed done when you normally would.

...I'll be the contrarian.

Changing the oil early, won't hurt it. If there IS crud, or solvent, or whatever, in the block...and you run up to the "highway use" long-distance oil-change schedule...that crap is in there.

Will it show damage today? This week? Your first 50,000 miles? Probably not. What you do at the beginning, pays you back on the other end, towards the end of the expected service life.

You just don't know. I had a Chevette once, that I probably broke in too hard (not intentionally; just me being a kid) and it threw a rod at 40,000 miles. Later, I bought a used Pinto, with the German 2-liter four in it...owned by an older guy who had country-club parking stickers on it. It had 70,000 miles when I bought it and 130,000 when I sold it.

And oil pressure was up to factory specs for a NEW engine when I sold it. I had a gauge on the dashboard. So...a better-quality engine, broken in conservatively, lasted what was, for that era, a long-long time.

You can do the same. Wuz I U, I'd just change the oil early if it's convenient, rather than run it 5k before the first change.

For what it's worth.

I had my first oil change done on my 2014 Yaris a few hours ago at 3,673 miles. On 11-14-2014, I wanted to get my oil changed at exactly 3,500 miles, but I had a flurry of unexpected last minute errands to tend to before leaving that night and didn't have time to get it done that day (I just returned to Texas late last night). I went to a place that I've patronized for my last few 2007 oil changes...they also did the wheel bearing replacement at 110k miles on my 2007. I got there about 40 minutes before they closed, but they wouldn't take me ...and I mentioned that I'm a repeat customer with my other Yaris. I remembered that the service department at Fred Haas Toyota is open later, so I headed there. On the way, I passed a place called Service First Automotive. I remember watching (over time) their building being built (open less than a year, IIRC). The property always looks perfect. I turned the corner to drive around the other side. They had the bay doors open and they bays were well lit. How that area looked otherwise ?....almost as pristine as pics of CTScott's garage. I pulled onto the property. When I walked in, it was about 35 minutes before closing. They cheerfully accepted my business. They have Starbucks coffee and cocoa, an iPad bar, chilled bottled water that they put in a wine refrigerator, and all the seating in the main waiting room = recliners...and the flat screen TV that a lot of places have. Their cheapest oil change (34.99 + tax) was more than the place that wouldn't take me, but cheaper than I knew the total would be at Fred Haas Toyota. They deducted for their internet coupon (re my first visit), and the out the door total ended up being $31.50. The oil they put in...a synthetic blend. They don't do straight conventional oil. They also offer a bulk full synthetic at the same price and, for $10.00 more, name brand synthetics. it turns out they are a 3 store 'chain'.

P.S. They also include a car wash with the oil change

My guess is they will raise their prices sooner or later. They have to pay for all that stuff.

And when they find out youre driving a Yaris that doesnt need to be fixed they'll charge you accordingly!

I went to one of the two on Louetta Road (Louetta and Ella), not the one in The Woodlands. The 34.99 is actually high for that area. There are two places )among many others) on Louetta....or half a block off Louetta...that only charge $14.99 plus tax and disposal fee ($20.00 out the door). I'm curious re if they charge more at their location in The Woodlands.

Great town. Lots of interesting buildings and nice people. The map program I was using (can't remember which one) gave me terrible directions...but now I'm more familiar with the many name changes that occur along various streets .

It's, um, and interesting town. Been changing rapidly the last two or so years.

One thing I liked about it....it seemed to be an unpretentious place .
