Golf cart/diesel??

Hey there all,

I've been noticing lately that my engine sounds like a loud gas powered golf card or diesel engine when accelerating.

I remember reading something regarding an exhaust part that caused the noise, but I'm wondering what that would be.

When driving at a constant speed it's fine just when accelerating I can hear the LOUDness of the engine.

Any help would be appreciated!

does it seem to lack power when accelerating? or a bit sluggish? chances are if it's louder and sluggish then there is probably a hole somewhere in your exhaust system allowing more emissions to escape than normal.
if not that maybe a problem with your resonator? or the catalytic converter ?

Or a heat shield on the exhaust somewhere.

lol, all the canadians chimed in on this one.

my vote is exhaust leak. loose heat sheild sounds like.....well a loose heat sheild. would sound more like something is being dragged under the car

I've had a loose heat shield before and it was more of a metal clanging sound... but I will check under the car for that.

And no, there is no real hesitation or sluggishness ... it just sounds louder when I am accelerating, like a diesel engine sort of, it's hard to explain.

It could be the CAT but how can I check?

If you mean diesel sound like the "clickety clack" you hear from most of them I would inspect the exhaust manifold. A cracked manifold would cause a similar noise.

exhaust leak. check the "flex" pipe portion for holes or leaks.

excessive water in the muffler for some odd reason? did you back into a snow bank and got snow in the exhaust which then melted, and isn't draining out for some reason? lol

naw, most likely u wouldnt hear a sound from that.

my friend works at a dealership and someone got their car towed to the dealer cuz it wouldnt start. they checked it out and saw the exhaust tip was full of snow and ice, so they left it inside to melt and 2 hours later it started up no problem

Nope that's not it...

I did a quick check of the rubber hoses and everything seems fine. I am now thinking it could be the PCV Valve? I usually change it every year (cheap part) but I haven't for a while.

Also I am due for new spark plugs but I don't think that would be it.

PCV and Spark Plugs couldn't possibly make the sound you are describing. I am pretty much 100% that it is an exhaust leak somewhere. Take it to an exhaust shop that checks for free. Most will give you a free estimate (at least you will find the problem then).

if trying to pinpoint an exhaust leak, could always spray some seafoam into the throttle body, have somebody else rev the engine and look underneath to see if you can see any smoke 'leaking' from other parts of the exhaust - I guess exhaust leak is the only one that fits this issue.

for it to be a exhaust leak and for it to just all of a sudden appear, it wasnt slow and slowly getting worse ur looking for a crack (header) or u blew out the seal between header and exhaust or the flex pipe part has gone bad, i remember a thread from a member in ottawa or quebec that had his flex pipe go bad with reletavitly low km and it was said to be due to city driving.

Thanks guys ... I will probably get someone to rev the engine while see if I can find any smoke or anything ... if that fails I will take it in to see what's wrong. :P

u probably could have done it when it was cold, i doubt ull see any smoke now.

as someone revs it, spray water along the header and at the joint and see if u see the water getting blown out of the air
