Manual with no tachometer tips

So I just got a 2009 Yaris 3 dr LB on Saturday and am trying to adjust to driving with no tachometer. I like the car so far. I was hoping to get some tips. When I can hear the engine it is no problem, but I am always listening to loud music when I drive, and I can't hear the engine when I do.

I drove a 01 Hyundai Accent for years and it drives way different. this is what I generally do:

25 mph - 3rd gear

25-40 mph - 4th gear

above 40 mph - 5th gear

Does that seem right or is there another method to get used to.

I was thinking of getting an ecometer or scangauge but i read that there is a delay and can't be relied on as a tachometer.

any advice would be great.

It's an econo-car (exactly what I wanted). Upshift as quickly as you can, and if it's too soon, you'll know. After a short while, you'll just get used to how it feels.

Now been Yaris-ing for more than 3 years. General rule for "everyday" driving -
1st gear - 0 to 10
2nd gear - 10 to 20
3rd - 20-30
4th - 30 to 40
5th - 40 and up

These change when going uphill, and for hard acceleration remember that she'll do 64 in 2nd before red-line, and around 90 in 3rd. Uses more fuel, but if you need to speed up in a hurry, them's the limits.

But if you join an interstate, or want to race some bitch to merge in front of her, try 3rd gear to 65, 4th to 80, 5th to cruise at 90.

after awhile you can feel the powerband taking off. You can feel the car stops picking up speed then you shift to next gear

She'll go to 64 in 2nd, then 90-ish in 3rd - you're not trying hard enough there...

The tach on the ecometer updates twice a second so it should be plenty accurate for daily driving. If I'm not mistaken it's the same for the SG. Priced nice and easy to "install" plus the other features and benefits.

if you need a tach to drive , maybe you should get on a bus instead and off the road since your constant gawkin at the gauges will get someone killed

I've used both an EcoMeter and an Ultra-Gauge which both have a tach function. Both are OK for that but as stated earlier the ecometer updates twice a second and the ultra-gauge updates only once a second. Both fine for daily driving. But after using both I;ve come to realize that, for a tach, theres nothing like the instant feedback of a regular, purpose-built tachometer gauge with a sweeping needle and lit numbers. It just feels "right" and a quick glance, or even just in your peripheral vision can tell you exactly what your engine is doing. However, I'm very happy with my ultra-gauge and fully recommend it for all its functions, and the tachometer display on it is a nice bonus for "normal" driving.
