You made the right choice. I came from a 2010 Golf TDI and after dealing with 4 years of (almost) constant problems I finally gave up. The Golf does have an upscale feel and wonderful driving dynamics but VW has a serious quality control problem. If any one is seriously considering a VW purchase be sure to spend some time on any of the various VW enthusiast forums before making a decision. You will be horrified. My own story is here:

@ NYC-SE: And I thought my VW issues were bad. Yours were absolutely horrible. I really liked VW products, but now that I have owned my first Toyota, I am a convert.

As much as I think VW/Audi products are sexy and great driving cars I just would never buy one. They have just far too many issues, and when something breaks it costs a ton and a half to fix.

IIRC, the problems with my GTI didn't start until after 90k miles. Given how people feel on this thread (with good reason), It sounds as though giving VW even that much leeway (re miles) is currently not a wise proposition.

VW for whatever reason just doesn't care about reliability of its vehicles. They still have reports of electrical gremlins that have been off and on for twenty years now. That is just totally absurd.
