I believe that the start and stop system was only available on the 2nd generation European Yaris with the 1.33L engine. The benefit of it was fuel savings, but it was such a small savings that it looks like they discontinued it. The key to it was the use of a hybrid-style starter.

You might be right however it still comes as standard option for cars such like Jaguar or Land Rover.

Just had a look at my owner's manual. There is section related to Stop & Start system with the comment "if equipped"

It is still a common feature for many manufacturers. I think though that on little engine cars that the savings is negligible as compared with the complications to add it.

There is a big downside to the start stop system. Battery replacement interval goes down to about 1yr. So the minor increase in fuel savings turns into a big cost increase in battery replacement.

Reffering to the owner's manual the stop & start system will not operate if the battery is not fully charged or the engine coolant hasn't reach certain temperature.

In fact I think stop & start system would interfere with number of features such as journey time or reloading touch & go

Had it on the BMW 116i I drove in Germany two weeks ago, and hated it. I guess because of the temperatures at the time (mainly below freezing) it only worked part of the time; but it's a pain even with an automatic. It can be easily disengaged by briefly removing your foot from the parking brake. A Civic I drove in Hawaii had the same thing and I equally disliked it on the Honda.
