When exactly does VVTi kick in?

2007 Yaris sedan here. I was just wondering at what rpm this feature kicked in. Also, does it give more power or simply save us fuel?

When exactly does VVTi kick in?

VVT is always active for best fuel efficiency.

It's not like Honda VTAAAKK.

I think all valves open up at around 33-3500 rpm.

That is awesome. I don't really understand the images though.. Like the white and black semi circles and what they represent. I'll have to do some additional research and self-learn a thing or two about valve timing.

those are the cam shafts of the intake (IN) with respect to the exhaust (EX). Imagine you are viewing the engine from the side (the 3 pistons blocked from your view by the piston closest to you)

Both of them in reference to 0degrees of timing or TDC (top dead center).

Funny, I thought it kicked in at 4k rpm, since that's where the power band starts. Something new every day, eh?
