new brakes or some bs upsell?

i went to get some maintenance done and the people said that I needed new brakes, it is common for this car to need new brakes? It's a 2010 yaris (auto) with only 16000 miles on it! When I bought this car it already had 5,000 something miles on it.

I might go to the dealer or another shop later on this week to get a second opinion but I am kind of surprised since i thought brakes were supposed to last at least 25,000 to 30,000 miles. I don't drive with both feet ("riding the brakes") and I mostly use it to commute about 7-10 miles (14-20 miles total) each day. Mostly highway too, maybe like 1-2 miles is driven in the city.

60k! Wow is that how much you drove before you replaced them or just a consensus?

In the off chance that I do need new brakes, do you think that Toyota would honor their warranty to replace the brakes? Given the high discrepancy between the consensus and my situation, it would be logical to say that new brakes would be covered by Toyota.

The odds are you are dealing with a total scumbag. My wife couldnt wear out a set of front brake pads that fast.

yea it was sort of weird, the guy that was doing the oil change and inspections didn't say anything (maybe he forgot to inspect the brakes?) and was really helpful but then out of nowhere a second guy comes in and tells me I need new brakes. FISHY and left me almost speechless since I have such a low amount of mileage to need such a major level of work done.

thanks yarisworld for your input! I will take my car to the dealership some time next week (or month) since it doesn't seem to be a pressing issue to confirm the diagnosis or lacktherof.

I have 25K on my 2009 and a couple of weekends ago, while I had it up on the lift with the tires off, I checked my brake pads and they had barely any wear at all.

manuals use infinitely less pad than autos. I went for a drive the other day and I could touch my rotors- they weren't even hot

This. Mine's 2008 roughly the same mileage, and brakes look like new. It might be slightly different with an auto as mine is manual and I tend to downshift and only use the brakes to come to a complete stop.

Unless the previous owner stood on those brakes 24x7 I doubt they need replacing. I think the worst case I ever read about on here was at 15K but the driver admitted to being a brake abuser.

Just a heads up about the dealers. They can be crooks too! An honest one is a godsend. My daughters 98 Camry was making a lot of noise. The exhaust manifold was cracked. She took it to a dealer and was told she needed $3200 of work including water pump, radiator, head gasket (as well as the manifold.

My brother in law did the work for $800.

since the yaris is front wheel drive how come the brakes in the rear are more worn down than the front? Are the rear brakes less thick than the front? yea i was really skeptical of taking my car to the dealership at first but my dealership is really good at taking care of their customers except for that fact they can get really busy (1-2 hour expected wait for simple jobs!).

When I was in an accident a few years ago with another car, we got a quote from them as a baseline and used that to compare with other shops. The quote we got from toyota matched the shops in my area with the exception of a couple of shops beating toyota by margins.

The rear star wheel adjusters may stop working after a while, leaving the rear brake shoes too wide a gap to brake first and strong. So they wear less than the front brakes.

I'm at 97k and haven't *needed* to change the pads/shoes, but keep adjusting the rear star wheel adjuster to keep it tight.

Manual.

Auto or not 16k is way too short of a life. But if several people say it's the case it makes you think. Easy enough to take the wheel off and measure the pad thickness though.
