Are you changing your oil at 5k mile interval recommended by Toyota?
I'll be doing 3k intervals.

I think it really depends on the conditions as far as where you live also how much you drive and traffic such as stop and go...generally you really don't need to change every 3K but if you drive a lot then yeah or at least that's one reason generally speaking.

I do quite a bit of city driving, plus I have the oil changes covered already, so I am doing them about every 3000 miles. However, I don't strain myself to do them exactly every 3000 miles...

if your oil looks mint at 5k, your probably fine. I do nearly all highway driving, and could probably go a good while witout changing the oil.
With a swap to synthetic, I plan on only swapping filters every 5k :) |

Every 16,000km
using Amsoil 2000 0w-30. FWIW The mini cooper has an oil change interval of 12,000km, dealers use Mobil 1.

Yes, every 5000 miles with a Toyota filter. I drive about 80 miles per day, all highway. I use petroleum based oil, and recycle the old oil as fuel in my diesel pickup.

I change the oil about once every 8,000 km (5,000 miles) or six months, whichever comes earlier. I guess that is what the manual advises. As a non-professional, I find this arrangement so far so good. As a matter of fact, the Toyota dealership in my neighborhood sends me a reminder once every six months to make sure that I go back to them for regular services. Every time I go back, they give me a small souvenir (so far so true). That is very smart of them.

The 3K mile oil change interval is a thing of the past, lubricants today are a lot more advanced than the oil we had 20 years ago. And modern engines do a lot better job of getting most of the oil in the engine circulated through the oil filter.
Our oil change intervals at Mercedes-Benz are from 10-14K miles, depending on what the sensors in the oil pan decide about the oil quality. But that's with full synthetic Mobil One and an engine designed for those intervals. Toyota engineers decided on 5K miles for our Yaris' with semi-synthetic, and if they're wrong then Toyota would be out of a lot of money replacing engines later down the road. If you decide to use non-synthetic cheap oil from a gas station, then that would be your own fault, and you probably would have to change the oil at every 3K miles. |

The reason I'm going for 3k oil changes is that I only drive about 6k miles per year ... it will take me 6 months to reach 3k.
At 3k I probably won't be going with synthetic oil. |

Ok, I changed mine at 4850 even though that darn light was flashing at 4500 miles. I'm a firm believer on the 3k mile oil change. But as someone stated on here, newer engines are far more advanced than before. Therefore, you can go longer than the 3k mark (depending on application). My manual and dealership both said 5k. I just did an oil change last week and put in MOBIL-1 Synthetic 5W-30 using a WIX filter. You may think that by using synthetic you can go further before the next change but I will stick with the 5k intervals.
Now, I have a question. Is my "maint. required" light going to come on again at the next 4500 miles or is their something like a switch that determines when the oil should be changed?? I know I will let you know when it happens that way we all know!! ....and yes, FRAM oil filters= death for your vehicle. Everyone has a an opinion. Thank you, sambo42xa Southern NH USA |
