1.Screw off the shift knob.
2.Gather the loose pieces...ie the ring that seats the top of the boot.
3.Dismount the whole plastic piece that is the base of the shifter boot.
4.Take the boot off with the plastic piece.
5. Put the metal ring back onto the shifter stalk.
6. Put the tip of the boot back on, you'll notice there is a notch where the ring should go. Fiddle with the ring inorder to "clamp" the top of the boot onto the shifter stalk via the metal ring.
7. Re-install the entire boot + plastic surround/base.
8. Screw knob back in.

.... I don't believe there are any screws involved with the pastic base, check to be sure not to break any supports. If I remember correctly, there were just tabs holding things in place. You might be able to do this without taking the shifter knob off, but it was easier with the knob off. Lastly, I need to bend/reform the ring so that it would fit more snuggly into the notch.

My boot came off exactly as yours did. At first I thought I could just play with the ring and re-seat the boot back into the groove but the ring was too loose for that and it eventually came off again.

I guess some cars have rings which weren't tight enough. I fixed it the second time doing this method and it has stayed in place since.

Guess i'll have to order the ring from the dealer? or i could actually put a mod on the car and use a chrome hose clamp

Couldn't you just re-bend that ring?

Don't even need a ring, could even just head down to the hardware store and buy a piece of metal and tie the boot with that.
