How often do I need to change my synthetic oil?
I switched to synthetic engine oil at 9,000 miles . (Mobil 1) When should change the oil and filter next time?
Thanks a lot!! Have a good day!! |

for warranty purposes, you should stick to the 5,000 mile intervals (which is what i'm doing).
freakin cost me 35 bucks to change my own oil (also using Mobil 1). |

this is one of those questions that gets a lot difference answers so everybody will say something different. like for example on MINIs the intervals are 10k miles for 1st service and 15k miles after that or 1 year. Yep thats correct... |

Yep, that can't be beat! I get the Napa Gold filters though. $6.00 each.

wow, now that's a long interval. i would still change the filter every 5k tho.
lucky! i want free oil. hahahaha. yeah, it went up like a dollar a quart since the oil change before last. when i first switched to Mobil 1, it was 5 something. now it's 6 something! |

Go with Mobile1 5w20 every 5,000 miles. Then after warranty expires, go with Mobile1 0w20 EP (extended performance) for 10,000 mile intervals. It's rated to go 15,000 but I not go past 10,000 if I were you. Change the filter to Mobile1 Filters too. You could go AmsOil, as it is a better synthetic, but it is not off-the-shelf readily available like Mobil1..Pennzoil Platinum has a great reputation too.
Mobile1 EP has a great additive package added, and handles shearing, fuel dilution very well. And it keeps the particles in the oil away from the parts. and for this reason looks dirty faster, which is not a bad thing...better to keep the grime suspened in a detergent oil then on the parts. You will hear lots of internet mythology here and other places. Go to this site for the most credible information on oils: http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php By the way, oils having 10W40, 0W20, 5W30, etc...these names are NOT viscosity...they are oil GRADES. So it is best not to judge viscosity from the grade name. Often a 5W20 oil will actually have a thicker viscosity then a 10W30 grade oil, so don't get fooled...to learn more see the link above...it is freakin fastenating. A LOT of urban myths and old traditional thinking on oil get smashed in that site....I for one found this out first hand... |

I've been using Mobil 1 for almost 30 years. My cars always fall apart before I have any engine problems.
Stick with the 5,000 mile interval. Toyota made it easy with the oil change light. |

I am a firm believer in synthetic after 5k or so mileage, not the first oil change! I prefer Mobil 1 regular synthetic but brand names is just another redundant debate. Pick an oil and stick with it. I always use the recommended weight/grade oil per car or engine. Whatever Toyota wants.
I prefer OEM filters unless I have seen brand X's internal design. 5k change intervals? I just don't buy it. It is not going to hurt anything to change at 3k intervals, no excuses. I'll gladly pay for preventative maintenance where it counts. Oil is the blood of your engine.

You are absolutely correct. However, it isn't going to hurt anything to change oil sooner. That 5k interval may be based on using the OEM filter as well.

Lets go with science instead of feelings. And to those that change oil way too often and claim their engine ran strong after 10 millions miles, you need to understand that your engine would've gone that long with MUCH less frequent changes anyways...you lose, oil company stock holders win. Only those easily scammed go with 3,000 mile changes. for the oil industry, and JiffyLube type places. |

I'll give you that. My theory is this though... if Toyota is willing to roll 5,000 miles on dinosaur oil, I'm willing to roll 5,000 on my super-premium synthetic.

For that money, you could buy some real oil! Just trying to start the Mobil 1 vs. everyone else debate. Its a fun one.

I always go with what the manufacturer suggests. I had a '01 Maxima and that said to do it every 3000 miles so that's what I did. If Toyota says 5,000... then I'm doing 5,000.
