Preventative maintenance or run it till it sounds bad?

just wondering what the general consensus is around here, whats been your strategy? Any surprise part failures for anyone here?

im at 160k on the clock with a couple squeaks here and there but my 07 hb runs like hell otherwise

next parts on my watch list are:
alternator
water pump
engine mounts
fuel pump
fuel filter

im stuck on this topic since i wanna keep this car forever (plus im broke )

I mean preventative is definitely the way to go if you can.

Some things fail unexpectedly, but basic maintenance should be kept up as best as possible.

Nothing to do on your "watch" list. These things fail when they do.

Preventive maintenance would be checking axle boots for cracks/leaks, oil pan rust, timing chain cover leak, sway bar bushings, cleaning throttle body, etc.

Oil and air filters, spark plugs, tire pressure, rear drum adjustment, etc. With these newfangled engines, computer controls and all that, tune ups are pretty simple now. But at 160,000miles, you're long due for spark plugs if they've never been changed.
