Power Door Lock Install - Optimal Solution

Hi All,

I recently got my brother's Yaris as my daily driver, it has 205,000 miles and everything works. Unfortunately, no door locks. I called around stereo places and either it was super expensive or no one wanted to do it - too difficult and too many come backs for failed installs for the cable bracket attachment. The shops recommended buying the factory actuators and they will install - after checking prices, not worth it even for after market ones and the work involved.

So I bought the Installgear power door kit but did not use the cable wire brackets as I found them unreliable and difficult to hold down the main cable wire to the locks. No wonder stereo shops didn't want to touch the cable locks.

But I did find an optimal solution. I drilled holes to the door knobs and handle frames to attached a 16 guage wire to connect to the aftermarket door lock actuators. The 16 guage wire (about $2.00) can be found in the picture framing section of HomeDepot to rig up a more reliable solution. The metal rods that came with the kit are too stiff for this solution. You need a sturdy but flexible enough rod to reinstall into the knob and door handle frame. Now the actuator is actually controlling the door knob and not the the factory wire cable, it's a more direct approach and more reliable method. I hope this helps anyone dealing with cable door locks - believe me I spent over 3 days figuring this solution. The solution involves squeezing the door knob out (see images) and retrofitting the wire into the knob and door handle frame. The knobs have to come out to secure the wire by bending the end of it (another solution would be to out epoxy at the end of the wire to secure from jumping out of the knob hole). See the images of how I did it - now the only point of failure would be the aftermarket actuators themselves, which is super easy and cheap to replace.

I hope this helps the Yaris community and other vehicles with cable style door locks.
