08 Yaris Manual Sedan Running Poorly
Hey Everyone,
Just today, after an inspection on the car, I came across oil in my PCV and surrounding hoses. In addition, my coolant has become a murky brown colour when the coolant was red when I last checked it 2 months ago. Upon further inspection my oil when viewed on the dipstick was dark brown and smelt like burnt oil. All this after only 5000kms and 8 months running time on the oil. Furthermore, there is a significant decrease in overall performance and power which I'm not sure of the cause. One last thing I should add, was when driving back from shopping a few days ago, I noticed a minor, intermittent ticking noise coming from the engine. If anyone can help me and give me some advice on what it could be, that would be fantastic. Thanks in advance, SLIFox |

Oil/coolant interaction. Did you have an overheating event? I'm going to go with number 1 below.
Blown head gasket Defective or deteriorated seals Improperly torqued head bolts Thermally warped or cracked cylinder heads Cracked block or cylinder head from frozen coolant Improperly machined head and block surfaces Corrosion damage of cylinder liners Damage or corroded cooler cores Water pump seal failure and weep-hole blockage |

I have only done 6000km since I got it with 227000km on the clock now. Probably never had valve seals or anything checked. What are the main things that can go first and foremost? Valves sealing be an issue? Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk |

All of the above as well as a blocked pcv valve. Remove the pcv valve and clean it out from both side with some brake cleaner or other solvent. Re install and change the oil and see if the problem persists

Maybe the battery drained and the head/block warped when the serpentine belt failed, the alternator and water pump stopped turning, and the driver kept driving.

How would the coolant darkening relate to a blocked PCV valve?
I had a small block Chevy metal PCV valve clicking so loudly that I adjusted the valves on that side before discovering what it was. It wasn't dirty, and the same looking (and same acting, in hand) replacement PCV valve was quiet. |

It may not necessarily be causing the coolant issue but it is the simplest thing to check and rule out so it should be done first

Yes. First thought was that the head gasket has to withstand combustion pressures, so it wouldn't feel the elevated crankcase pressure from a plugged PCV valve. But the HG has metal rings that are only holding combustion pressure...and maybe a small metal or other special detail around the oil supply port.
