OEM Tires: How Long They Have Lasted Me!

Car has 40k miles on it now. Tires were rotated ONCE. The original fronts wore out at 35k miles. Car has new tires on the front and the two remaining OEM tires on the rear. These tires have been there for 5k miles and the tread 5k miles ago was just above the wear bars.

Which is where it is now.

I intend to run these tires until there are large bald patches.

I expect they will go maybe 15k more miles!

Opinions?

BTW bald tires on the rear can lead to spinouts on slippery roads on curves even if you are going a prudent speed! I don't drive much anymore and I don't have to drive in bad weather. But you want your best tires on the REAR not the FRONT because of this phenom.

I was always brought up you want the best tires on the front (and maybe you do) but I had a minor accident two winters ago when I spun out at very low speed on a curve.

Obviously it's best to try to maintain even wear on all four corners. Hence the rotation regime. I ran a little too bald on the fronts with my last set and lost steering due to hydroplaning.

Done a bit of accident investigation. I wouldn't run poor or suspicious condition tires on anything.

I only ever did 3k miles with my OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE92 before I swapped the wheels and tires. Lol

All I use the car for is driving to work in good weather at 35-45 mph.

Also Im saving for retirement!

And besides I have a pilots license and ride motorcycles. Which require at LOT more thought to operate safely than a car.

Ok will try to be nice about this but all I hear from you on this is

"all I use the car for is driving to work"= I only point the gun at my head and pull the trigger when its unloaded

"in good weather"= I let mother nature check the gun she wouldn't do anything crazy

"at 35-45 mph" = and what's the harm its only a .22

I mean why even take the chance

I understand that you are saving but its just one of those Preventative Maintenance things that should be done as a couple Hundred dollars can save thousands in body work if you only get a in a minor wreck

I could throw all kinds of facts at you about why there are tire tread patterns but you are most likely aware of these facts

You may never have an issue and drive the tires till they fall apart ( had many friends that did this when I was a teen) but what if you have that bad day. You are just gambling with many things that sound like you don't want to gamble with as to your retirement. What if you total the car? Will buying a new car help your retirement savings

Well that's my $1.25 hope I didn't offend you or anyone else that practice's this same tire use plan but I'm a blunt person

Driving on bald tyres is dangerous at any speed, especially on wet roads. The likelihood of a flat, blow-out, or loss of control is high. You could earn a ticket for driving on bald tyres because it is illegal, and you put yourself and others at risk. If you get into an accident, your insurance may deny a claim. And, if someone gets hurt or killed in the accident, you may find yourself involved in some serious litigation because of your negligence.

God help you if you cant handle driving on bald tires without killing yourself! What would you do if you had to do something really dangerous? You would melt like marshmallows over a campfire!

On a trip to Alaska I came across a fellow riding a motorcycle who had an accident. Not a bad one he just slid down the road a little ways. He was afraid the frame was bent. He was afraid the forks were bent. (unlikely but so what if they are?) The handlebars were messed up, brake lever broken, a footpeg torn off. He was about to give up and abandon his $10,000 motorcycle because it was impossible to arrange shipping home.

I told him "Get on that bike and RIDE it! Ride it five miles down the road and five miles back to your campsite. Go 20 miles an hour. Keep doing that until you get used to it. Unless the bike says its too f'ed up to ride KEEP GOING! If it'll do 20 try 30. Then try 40. But if I were you Id stick at 50!"

I gave him a pair of vicegrips to use as a footpeg and we cobbed up the handlebars and brake lever. I explained when he got to someplace he could arrange shipping to send the bike home.

He made it all the way to his home in Michigan and after a couple of days he was going 75! He said it was the greatest thing he ever did in his life!

Cant imagine any of you doing THAT!

Ok so will use your example to push the point as what he did was a necessity that needed to be done but to bring it to what you plan on doing is to getting home on the bike and deciding that well it has gotten me this far why fix it so I can save some mony

Its not just YOUR need to squeeze every penny out of a set of original OEM tires in play here, its the safety of others.

Seriously....don't be "that driver".

I just replaced my (still serviceable) OEM tires at 43k and replaced them with Michelin Defenders. Better ride, much quieter, and.....safer.

The State of NJ has not required cars to be inspected for the last ten years.

Just emissions that's all.

Its the whole State that officially out of compliance.

No smog, no safety required in QC, unless it's an import or has not been plated for over a year, then safety is required.

Gov have been giving incentive for people to replace their old cars, so we now see less smoke machines on the road.
