2007 Yaris Shifting Problems

I looked around the forums and saw a couple of similar issues to mine, but nothing exactly like it.

My car is a 2007 Yaris Sedan with an automatic transmission and 103,000 miles. We've had it since it was new.

Starting a few days ago when going between 25 and 30 MPH the transmission shifts constantly from what seems like 3 to D if I have the selector on D. The tach fluctuates between 1200 and 2000 RPM when it switches. If I drop the selector over to 3, it stops doing it. If I then switch it back over to D it seems not to do it unless I stop completely and then start again. This seems to happen mostly on flat ground or slight downgrades when I am barely touching the throttle. There are no issues at lower speeds or faster speeds, and it comes up through the gears just fine on acceleration.

I want to try cleaning the throttle body and maybe MAF this weekend to see if that does any good. Other than that, I thought it might not hurt to get the transmission flushed since it has never been done. The fluid looks fine (pinkish) on the dipstick.

Any other suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't heard that one before and that symptom is not mentioned in the service manual. The ECM uses data from the Turbine Speed Sensor and the Vehicle Speed Sensor to decide on when to do the shifting, so I would suspect on of those two sensors, but considering there are no other symptoms, I would start with the fluid change.

Thanks for the advice. Would cleaning the throttle body and MAF sensor do anything for it? It's possible that I'm not describing the problem accurately. Is there anything that would have similar symptoms?

Thanks in advance!

The fact that putting it in 3rd, rather than D makes it go away, says that it is tranny related. The TB and MAF would not be involved. You can inspect the connectors that go into the transmission to make sure none are damaged or corroded. Others have had issues with mice chewing through insulation on the wires to the tranny connectors.

Okay, great. Thanks for helping out. I will work on it this weekend and report back.

Over the weekend I cleaned the throttle body and MAF, reset the ECU, had the transmission flushed and added some Seafoam Trans Tune. Seems to be a little better, but it's still doing it. Particularly after it gets good and warm (after driving for 20 minutes or so). Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Did you check the wiring and connector condition?

I checked the wiring and connectors as best as I could. There were two on top of the transmission that looked good, but I don't know if there were others I couldn't see.

OK. The top ones are the most likely damaged ones. At this point any further diagnosis would require the Toyota Techstream diagnostics tool.

Okay, thanks for the help. Do you know how accurate the Techstream tool is? I don't mind paying whatever it costs to fix this issue, but I don't want to pay for a bunch of guess work, parts and service that I don't actually need.

The techstream tool will give you access to any error codes logged to the ECM in regards to the transmission as well as active viewing of all data available to the ECM by the sensors and controls of the transmission. That being said, it is entirely possible that no errors have been logged and that you won't be able to determine the issue from it, but being able to see things like the input turbine speed are quite helpful in diagnosing the issue.

Well, I don't know which thing helped it, but it stopped doing it now. I never got around to taking it to the garage to get checked out. Maybe the Transtune just took a little while to work?
