valves/cyclinder head long term reports

When I bought my Yaris it was for a long term vehicle (hoping 20+ years). The one weakness I identified was the cylinder head design. I was very surprised with the shimmed mechanical valves. Adjusting valves on this car is almost out of the question for a DIYer unless you invest in a bunch of shims.

My car is at 30K, I notice a little ticking. But I am wondering if anyone has had a valve wear out of adjustment and what milage it takes for that to occur? Just looking for feild reports/discussion.

Yeah, most cars get hydraulic valves these days!

They've been making this engine for about a decade now. If there were serious problems we'd probably have heard about them by now. From what I have heard, the valve lash is something you CHECK at about 100,000 miles and it may or may not need adjustment.

In any case, I was always under the impression that some ticking was good. No ticking means your valves have stretched and are now too long.

I've wondered about the valves. Mine seems pretty noisy, but I don't have anything to compare it to. I guess I need to visit a few Yaris owners and listen to their engines idle.
