anyone done it on their own? if i recall i think air filter change was recommended in addition to the normal oil change/tire rotation/brake inspection.

mine is now at 13000.
last oil change....at 11000.
last tire rotation...2 days ago (new rims/tires.. )
last brake check...dunno
last air filter change...dunno,
but i'm shopping for K&N since yesterday afternoon.

i will do all of this, when it hit exactly 15000

At 15K, you do...

Engine oil, filter & drain Plug crush ring - replace
Engine air filter - cleaning
Cooling system & hoses - visual inspection
External belts - visual inspection of condition
Drive shafts - inspect boots, and re-torque shaft flange bolts
Fuel injection system - add fuel injection cleaner additive to fuel tank: inspect lines, connections & tank vapor vent system hoses;inspect fuel tank gasket condition.
Exhaust system - inspect mounts
Brake components - inspect condition of lines, hoses, master cylinder, calipers & rotors
Brake pads - measurement of remaining pads
Power steering system - check operation & linkages, add fluid if needed, visual inspection for power steering leaks
Undercarriage - visually check for damage and condition, inspect fuel tank bands.
Windshield wiper and washer - fill fluid, clean and inspect wipers
Electrical equipment and lights - check bulbs and operation of warning lights
Suspension - visually inspect ball joints, dust boots, shocks/struts and suspension arm bushings
Battery - load test, top fluid, clean battery terminals
Rotate tires,set tire pressures and check wear and condition of tires
Test Drive
Reset Maintenance light indicator when applicable

Automatic - replace ATF (if equipped) (N/A to WS type fluid transmissions)
Manual transmissions - replace fluid (if equipped)
Rear differential - replace 80W90 gear oil
A/C Filter - clean
Air Filter - clean

Replaced the ATF at 15k? The manual says 100,000 I think...someone correct me if I'm wrong....

Replace manual tranny fluid at 15K? Another stupid thing...the manual does not call for this..again, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Clean the A/C & air filter? That is stupid. Just replace it, as they're cheap.

Don't buy into the trust thing with any garage, especially those that don't adhere closer to the Toyota manual in regard to maintenence intervals.

How much are they charging you for these services?

You need to reconcile everything your mechanic does to the owner's manual.

Reality Check for you: Mechanics are in the same class as car salesmen, realtors, and many lawyers...buyer beware...don't get scammed or fooled.

They are not your friend.

Trans fluid is recommend to be replace every 30k on AT and MT
change OIL - obviously every 5k

at 15k
I would Check your air filter, it may need changed if you live in a dust area
I would check your brakes as well, depending upon how you drive/stop
Check alignment
Rotate tires-should be free with brake inspection

The way I see it, I just tell them what I want and what needs to be done. For sure, some of the stuff are DIYs.

As for non-DIY people, the service schedule "meets and or exceeds the manufacturer's recommendations" which gives those people a peace of mind.

Finally, my main concern is the cost of the service. I learned that dealer service literally suck the money out of your wallet with efficiency. One of my option besides DIY is with these guys (Japanese Beetle) in the Bay Area.

The Toyota dealers in my area mail out coupons that show fairly good savings. I DIY most of my maintenence, but for those that don't, these coupons could be a way to go in getting Toyota dealer maintenence at very competitive prices, and since it is Toyota doing the service, it is probably done right.

I haven't done my 15K service yet so I cannot give you an actual amount. In my experience with my Civic, they first give me a written estimate, then they work on the car. When it's time to pay, they explain what they did and deduct certain items that was not necessary. In addition, with some friendly haggling, I get more discounts (been with them for more than three years). Sometimes it pays to know and be friends with your mechanic.
