Check engine light

we have a 2008 Yaris sedan. We just hit 55800 miles. And the check engine light has come on. Since it came on exactly when it hit 55800 I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is way to try and get us into the dealership for some unneeded tune up. The car itself seemed to be running fine. In need of an oil change but nothing else.

Loose gas cap? Did you fill up recently?

No, it is not a ploy.

As there are hundreds of codes which could be thrown, you really need to get it read. Could be evap (gas cap), O2 sensors, random misfire, just to name a few.

see it all the time

I see it all the time where people at the pump will top off their gas tank which causes the evap system to fail.

Let us know when you find out what it is.

Run by autozone. They will give you a code readout for free. Post the code on here and we can help you out

Is it the CEL or is it the Maint Req light? Maint req is not a CEL and does not throw codes according to the dealership. That is for their recommended oil changes, filter changes etc. If it is in fact a CEL then you need to have someone run a scanner on it and see what code(S) are being thrown. Maint req lights are easy to reset and take off, the CEL you ofc would have to fix w/e it is throwing the code then it'll go away.

I guess I'm just lucky. I've been topping off ever since I got my learner's permit, and I've never had to replace any fuel related parts on any vehicle .

By topping off as in filling up until you see gas at the cap. I never top off that much. First click and maybe add 1 or 2 more litres.

After the first click, I just round it off to the next dollar

Filling until I can see gas in the neck. I know that = 12.777 U.S. gallons because I once ran out of gas as I was pulling into a gas station (). When CTScott figured that the maximum capacity of the tank is 12.8 gallons, I knew this was correct because: 1. It's CTScott, and 2. Because of my 'running out of gas while pulling into a station' experience.

There was a past thread where one of the main questions was (I'm paraphrasing) - 'Is the click an unfailingly reliable 'set point' for figuring MPG (will it ALWAYS happen in the same place), or can some sort of malfunction cause a difference. CTScott weighed in with at least one scenario/malfunction that could cause a difference, and (IIRC) others did as well. I've always applied 'my style' (filling until I can just see gas in the neck), so that thread confirmed that my quest for accuracy and consistency (however picky and 'OCDish') has some concrete basis. I suppose if I ever had a fuel related part fail on a car I might reevaluate 'my style'...but I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that would compel me to do so.

why risk it

It may be just a matter of time before you foul your canister. But actually there are more reasons to NOT top off your tank. You can Google them but this one here seems very convincing.
