2020 hatch cheaper than expected

https://carbuzz.com/news/2020-toyota...an-we-expected

Good news I guess, still sucks that there's no manual option. The front end has not grown on me one bit, either.

It's a shame Toyota seem to just borrow other platforms and rebadge them these days. First the Supra, and now this? I mean, I'm sure they are both great cars... It's just that when I buy a Toyota I want an actual Toyota. Here's to hoping this isn't gonna be a thing.

Looks like the 2020 Mazda2/Yaris XLE hatchback costs about as much as the SE Yaris hatchback did in 2018.

I think that the hatchback version of this car pulls off the fish-face front styling better than the sedan version due to overall body shape & proportions, & it looks better than the fish-face front styling on the new Corolla hatch or sedan does.

I would be hesitant to buy one because I don't trust the more-problematic 6-spd Mazda automatic transmission, which has been shown to prematurely fail at random in the sedan version already a bit more than is comfortable for my taste (or perhaps those are just odd outliers). I also don't like the fact that it is purely direct-injection now (a Mazda Skyactiv engine) instead of either port-only or combo port/direct injection (like the new Corolla is smartly doing) - meaning it will need periodic (& relatively expensive) special engine cleanings for carbon deposits. The power-train & port-injected 1NZ-FE engine in the discontinued authentic Toyota Yaris (as of 2018) is MUCH MUCH better in terms of durability, reliability & low maintenance costs.

Now that Toyota Yaris TNGA rendering is a cool-looking Yaris hatch from what I can see of it - & one that I would buy. Once again the U.S./NA Toyota market proves that it is a sad, pale shadow of other global markets. Sure wished that I lived in a suitable European country, or back in Japan again.

On the bright side of being stuck with a Mazda-Yaris in the U.S./NA market, eBay already has some interesting OEM & aftermarket accessories available for the Mazda2/Demio of the same gen (2015-2019) as the 2020 Yaris hatch. The rear reflector pieces (~$20) that plug into those cutouts on the rear bumper that Toyota left empty (WTF Toyota?), a nice hatch spoiler upgrade over the tiny base built-in one, some lower body trim piece kits, etc.

Seeing that I haven't had a car payment since July 2012, I have zero interest in buying a Mazda parading as a Toyota. And man, I've had zero problems with my Yaris. What a great car it's been for me. I'm hoping for another 10 years with this awesome car......

Is Toyota still using the 1NZ-FE on Yaris vehicles sold outside the US? Is it just the US that's getting a Mazda/Yaris? Just curious.....

The model range here in Australia uses the 2NZ-FE in the base model, and the higher grades use the 1NZ-FE.
