Hey pipz! I need a 411 on how to clean my engine bay on this 1ZZ?

the first time I tried cleaning it... it messed up my iridium plugs and have to buy new ones,

I want to know the proper way of cleaning it and polishing it to "kinda" like new condition?...

Before I wash my car, I open my hood and use TireFoam on the whole engine bay. I then wash the car and use the left over soapy water to just lightly wipe any parts that look dirty. Rinse with low pressure hose water. Take the car for a drive to dry the engine off somewhat. The next day I re-apply TireFoam lightly and wipe it around the surfaces, and then the engine will look like new for quite a while. My 2002 Odyssey engine looks like new after 60K trouble free miles. Low pressure is the key and don't over wet your electonic stuff(fuse boxes, relays and stuff)

I have been detailing toyotas for the last 6 years and never had a problem with engines. It sounds like you don't have the cover over the engine thats the only thing i can think of. If i was you just find a good engine degreaser and use low pressure hose. And try to wash the engine every time you wash the outside of the car.

Exactly what I do too.

I just use an old shammy, put it in the leftover soapy water, ring it out, and wipe all around the engine bay. I follow that up with a dry cloth and, "Voila!" looks just like new!

Get a good engine degreaser, spray it on, let it sink in for a few minutes, then rinse of with a low pressure hose so your not forcing water in places it shouldn't go.

Once the engine bay dries off, use one of those 1-step tire spray products to dress the engine cover and other black plastic bits in the bay.

Viola!

Here's a before and after on my old Vios (precursor to the Yaris) after following these steps:

Any tips on what not to spray with the degreaser??? and also is it ok if you got a few drops of oil on the belt? do you need plastic?

this would be a great DIY here

... post one on DIY please!!!

it will make every car's engine bay look like new everytime...
and it will be a great help to this forum.

Well, the engine bay on the Yaris is starting to look a little grubby now, so I'll clean it up this weekend and post a step-by-step DIY :P

You'll be pleasantly surpised at how easy (and cheap, and quick) it is to get a great result

Personally, I just keep keep my engine bay wiped down everytime I wash my car, the reason is because when I worked as a grease monkey for a Ford dealership, I worked in a bay next to the detail guys. they used degreaser, then washed it off.

A fair portion of the cars they detailed(maybe 1 in 10) got sent through our shop later with electrical issues or misfires, ussually due from coils shorting out from excess water.

Just be very carefull when hosing your engine bay down.

OH really... does the Yaris have an ignition coil anyway???

The AE92 "1990 DX sedan" I had for free has got the engine washed, and the ignition got F'd up! I had to order my Crane ignition,coil,wires and other electrical stuff to get it running again... its my old tuner for free and still looks nice... I wish someone would give me a beat up T100 and I'll fix it.

Well it does have an ignition coil, just not in the same style a 1990 car had one. No distributor, and no exposed spark plugs or leads either. Go take a look under the hood and tell me what parts are going to susceptible to water related problems - you'll find it's not some old Ford clunker that could get easily upset by a little H2O

true, I have not even had the plastic engine cover off on my yaris yet. those detail guys actually mostly did cars other than fords, it was a private detail shop using part of the dealerships shop on lease.

On that note though, on the 5.4l 3v f150 fords, they had the coils on top of the plugs, and they would short out just from water getting into the engine bay, even without washing the engine,lol.

I was just letting you know to be carefull because I have seen bad results on alot of differant cars :)

we have a coil over plug design so spray away guys, just for those of you with cold air intakes don't soak the filter... everything else can get soaked
