Yaris Exhaust System..

Hello, I purchased a new Yaris hatchback in July 2010; about 15 mos ago.. I'm generally pleased with the car ;and have just over 8K miles on it.. Checking underneath the car; as I sometimes do, I notice a fair amount of rust on exhaust pipes and other elements of the system; more toward the motor as expected, but noticeable all along.. This rusting seems premature to me, compared to my Honda which did not do that. Has anyone had early exhaust problems with Yaris? I'd like to keep watch on this while its still under warrantee Thanks, Rich

I think it's a combination of your location and possibly driving patterns. I'd guess that you commute less than 20 minutes per trip, and that NJ uses salt on their roads. If you don't get the whole exhaust hot enough to evaporate the condensation on it, it just gets wet. Steel + wet = rust. =( Salt is harsh on exhausts too.

Edit:

I'm assuming that you haven't had dramatic changes to your driving routine since getting the Yaris, so it could just be a lower quality metal to reduce cost. I haven't looked at mine lately, so I can't really compare.

I've noticed the same thing on my 2010, with just 10,100 miles on it. My daily commute is around 30 minutes each way. It's only been through one winter, and I'm dreading what the next several months will do to it.
