paint problems
I have a 2007 Yaris on a long term lease. It has less than 33,000 Km. The paint comes off the front bumper with the simple use of a garden hose. When I reported it to the dealership the first time the guy told me it was my fault because the car was not waxed often enough. They say the problem is not a defect in the paint so I guess the bottom line is that a yaris should never be washed. Am I wrong or does this seem to be only a problem with the red ones. I guess that Toyota once again has their heads in the sand..

I have a red Yaris too, but I haven't (yet) encounter any problems with the paint outside of a few tiny rock chips. I rarely wax my Yaris (except spray on wax). I probably should invest time and better wax on my Yaris, since I live right by a salt water front.

Yeah, not the best paint, but not the worst either. There is no way the paint should come off with a garden hose at all unless you soak your car in thinner or something. Talk to the owner of the dealer next time.

If the paint is coming off with low pressure water it sounds like it was re painted on that area, some dealers do quick fixes when something small happens they will re paint the area. Is it the whole paint or just clear coat that is coming off?
I’ve been washing my car once a week for 3 years and my paint still on the car. |

uh?! I've never heard of paint coming off due to lack of wax. That's a good one!!
yes, the Yaris has thin paint but that's really weird. I have a 2007 absolutely red, BTW, and haven't waxed it in months. The only problem I have is rock chips and scratches on the front and back bumper from people who don't know how to park without hitting other people's cars. |

I totally agree with what others are saying. The paint on the Yaris is very thin and it doesn't take much to get through it, but that being said, it should not come off with a garden hose. Go to another dealer and have them check it out, something is definitely wrong.

That is definately a defect in the way the bumper was primed/painted.
The same thing happend to my Celica when the paint peeled from the front bumper lip at a DIY car wash. The dealer fixed it with absoluly no questions and the paper work from the warenty repair said (part) "not prepped properly causing paint to peel". So, tell the dealer that you have been well advised that this in not an unheard of problem and it's caused by fauly preperation before painting and it is definatly not your fault! Anyone who does auto body work will tell you the same. Last edited by RedRide; 04-29-2010 at 03:02 AM. |

Wow! Thank goodness I found this thread. I have a 2007 Yaris as well, black, and the same thing has been happening for a while. I dismissed it as just wear and tear but lately, especially after a wash that Toyota themselves did, the paint is peeling away like crazy.
I'm taking it into the dealership next week, I'll let you know how it goes. |

even after warranty paint should never come off. gm had a class action lawsuit on a batch
of cars in the 80's that paint peeled off after 80,000 miles. they got repainted. paint scratched and rust spots after 150,000, maybe. but chunks peeling, never ever ever should happen. it should just fade but never come off |

What the hell, paints coming off from using a garden hose?
I wash my 08 white yaris with pressure washer REGULARLY. I haven't experienced any peeling YET but holy fuck that's some scary shit if it comes off from using a mere garden hose.... I'm kinda hoping the paint on my car peels off before my 3yr warrenty comes to the end so that I can actually bring it in under warrenty lol

The clearcoat is peeling off or the actual paint is gone. So theres black patches where you can see the plastic bumper?

interesting - i'm having paint problems too, but they sound different from yours. mine isn't flaking off, but the clear coat is failing in patches on the rear bumper... and only the bumper. I stopped by the dealer this morning, and they said i'd have to take it to the body shop - which wasn't open. I'm bringing it by on Sat to see what they can do.
Did you get to talk with the dealer again? What happened? |
