Removal of manual transmission cable to get to reverse switch

Previously posted in a dead thread.

Rat chewed through my reverse switch wiring, rather than getting a new one I'm trying to lengthen the original wires.

I have two questions first:
1. Both wires are black, does the order the wires go back together matter? Because it's too late now to tell which wire goes to which.

2. How do you remove the transmission cable that's directly above the reverse switch? This one may be simple, but just wanted to be sure before going ahead.

Thanks.

I think it's just an open/close switch. Doesn't matter the polarity.
First you will have to remove the cutter pin that connects the cable to the lever, then use a pliers and a screw driver to remove the lock that attaches the cable to the bracket. Those locks are difficult to remove at times. Or you could just unbolt the entire bracket.
Have you tried doing the wiring from below the car? Last time I had to extend the reverse switch wire it was much easier to do from below the car.

Thanks! However the wires are chewed on the top of the transmission, about an inch away from the sensor so I think on top will be easiest.

Will give it a shot when I have time.
