12v port modification for extra ports, USB's, etc.

I'm not sure where to put this thread, so here it is in the main forum.

I would like help on replacing and repositioning the 12v car charger port to the passenger side central cubby hole thing that hugs the side of the radio/a/c area. I was thinking of either: 1) running a wire from the original 12v placement, under the center console, and drill a hole in the cubby hole to accommodate the wire snaked through or 2) re-solder the connection from the 12v original to the new unit, pictured below.

I need at least two 12v car charging ports and two USB ports and I want to do a quality install that looks stock or thereabouts. Thanks for your help.

Austin

Slow and careful and slow, make sure the lines and shape mesh with where you want to install it. The above bestek item has a chrome cover, for example, and there is no chrome inside a stock yari. But if you hide it far enough out of the way, it won't matter. But it looks better than my three outlet adapter.

I really don't need any USB ports but I'm sure in need of a few 12v outlets. Constantly switching between my smartphone and my GPS gets annoying. So I found this one on Amazon the other day. I'm going to hardwire it and position it under the passenger seat.

My HAM radio still needs to be installed but that will be wired direct also. My big hold-up is installing the antenna.

I need something like that as i'm continually changing sockets to power Gps,Satellite radio, CB radio,DVD player and a few others i cant remember at the moment,
If plugged into a lighter socket i'm wondering if 4 things plugged in would cause a problem with blown fuses..

Small gadgets such as your GPS, Cellphone and satellite radio shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure about the power draw on a CB radio or DVD player though. It all comes down to power rating and load.

I bought what I thought was a three position outlet at a swapfest.
Got home to find out that the middle position was probably intended for
the cigarette lighter element that normally goes in. However, it is just a
place to hold, as no power seems to be in the middle.
Oh well, it was cheap. I haven't mounted it yet.

What type of antenna mount are you thinking about?

This one shows how to put an outlet in the passenger cubby hole.
It might give you ideas on other areas to add power.

This link is good for other info on how to dismantle the bezels and plastic

When you get around to doing yours, we all would love to see some pics of
what you came up with.

I have a short little Comet 2m/70cm with an NMO mount waiting to be mounted on the roof. Been a little slow to start on the project since pulling the headliner has me a little worried.

Zebra,
Since we got a little off-topic, do you mind if I contact you via PM
with some questions?
