I use the dealer filter, its only $8 and i'm sure the engineers at Toyota have done testing to make sure its the optimum filter for the engine. Although there may be better filters out there as all filters are not created equal.Although the study is for a Ford motor it gives some good points to look for when trying to understand whats inside the filter and why i should buy one over another.

Best filter I've ever seen is the filter that came on the Yaris, from the factory, not the replacement found at the dealership...those appear to be good but nothing special. Factory filter looked like a premium Nippon, but with silicone valve, gasket and special construction for the media.

there is another thread on here that explains the difference in these filters.

I've never seen that. Maybe I'll look into it after I use up these 12 Pennzoil filters.

Once and a while (twice a year) the Toyota dealers in my area run a mail special. $3.95 each.

I use Pennzoil or valvoline in both my cars with oem for the yaris but puralator pure one for the 08crv, since the oem new Honda filters are made by fram. I have read alot of bad stuff on Fram for a while and saw cut filters of a few different brands and fram did look inferior. But what really did it was my neighbor uses fram or motorcraft and about 4 months ago his fram filter failed (seems to have come apart from the inside) and oil spilled everywhere. When he opened the the filter it looked like just a cup just filled with parts. There is a web site called bobistheoilguy.com which cover all this stuff in detail.

I use the Toyota filter that is recommended.
They're made by the same company that makes filters for VW and other name brand filters.

Maybe Fram has or is starting to get serious and up their game a bit...this cut-away doesn't look inferior, in fact it looks better than most, and same goes for their P/N for the Scion xD motor; that one looked as good as, maybe even a little better than OEM and WIX, as far as construction was concerned.

I use the toyota filter (come on, I do work for the dealer...) but I use bmw synthetic. Iam very happy with this combo; the oil that comes out at 5k, looks like pennzoil!

the rec. toyota filter (90915-YZZF2) does NOT have a check valve. the 90915-YZZF1 DOES. same threads, etc, thats the only difference (besides can length). as prev mentioned, the yaris (and a lot of other toyotas besides) dont need the valve due to orientation of the filter.

No, it's a really recent pic (I took it) of a new P/N (Ford's new 2.3 DOHC 4-cyl)...so new it's still a non-stocking number at O'Reilly's in this area (can still get it overnighted though), and WIX/Amsoil offered it for a brief time as a 51215/EaO33, until they decided to try the 51348 (long-time Toyota filter) for the Ford instead.

Fram has not switched their PH9566 P/N to a PH3614 (Toyota application) yet, for the new Ford.

i hate fram....had an issue on my camaro. the canister/filter element fell off or blew off while the screw part and gasket stayed on the engine. tell me that fram didnt just waste 30 bux in royal purple and tell me again that fram didnt pay for it...

i use wix, napa gold, toyota, delco, and i think that's about it.
