I changed my oil for the first time at 1,500 miles. I immediately switch to Mobil 1 5w-30. As soon as I discovered Mobil 1 0w-30, I switched to that. I started the Amsoil 0w-30 SSO at 85k and drained at 95k. This time, I'm going for a 15k mile oil change interval. I started with Toyota oil filters and switched to Mobil 1 oil filters once I started the extended oil change intervals.

I changed my manual transmission fluid at 70k the first time. I actually forgot about doing it and then realized I should have done it way earlier. The synchros went at 90k and a new/used transmission was installed. Now I will change it every year and use Amsoil's 75w-90 gear oil.

I bought a Yaris 2010 HB - 5 DOOR on June 5 - I was told to bring it in every 8000KM for servicing - so my 1st oil change is due @ 8000KM. My sales ref personally guaranteed me better performance and mileage after the 1st oil change. Anyway - I will def report back as to what happens after that 1st oil change - am already 3/4 there.

The extended oil change intervals (including the initial change) is dictated by marketing. They simply want to claim that their cars are just as/more maintanace free then the compitition.
Any engine builder will tell you that all engines experience initial wear and the metalic particles should be remove by changing the oil sooner than the regulare change interval.

Personally I changed my oil at 1,700 miles and they questiond "why so soon?
I replied that it was my car and I wont let marketing dictate how I maintain it.

Just thought I'd add an update to my Aug 09 post about how I changed the oil in my Yaris 4 times in the first 8000 km.

Since Nov. 09, I've been running German Castrol 0W-30. Changed it out in May at the 6month/6000 km point. The oil's appearance was still decent. (brown, slippery, not burnt or smelly). The engine runs great and has not burned any noticable amount of oil, ever.

I do a mix of city/highway driving and i'm now getting about 6.4l/100 (37 USMPG)
