Bad trans bearing

Hi, this is my dad's car so im not to familiar with it yet but i intend to repair it soon. I have more than adaquate knowledge of cars (hopped up 350hp bmw540 6speed) to attempt this myself. I even have a 12 ton press at home if necessary to push the new bearing in.

The car is a 2008 yaris auto w/ 60k miles with a bad vibration in one wheel.
he has isolated it to a bearing in the transmission where the halfshaft inserts. He says he can see the slop in it.
i havent seen it with my own eyes yet....

I am hoping i can simply pull the axle out and replace the bearing without removing the trans from the car. Is this possible?

Where can i get some exploded view parts diagrams so i can see what it looks like before i rip it apart and realize i didnt order enough stuff?
Is this a common failure for a car with this few miles?

Btw... Possibly related, last time i drove the car it would make a weird quack noise as i accelerated away from a traffic light. I was only able to make it happen twice so far, I think it was the auto shift into second when it happened. It sounded almost as if the horn was lightly honking one time real fast. At first i thought the horn was short circuiting a loose wire as i accelerated but im not sure anymore. It sounded like it came from the center of the car near the firewall. Hard to tell while driving from the interior.

Any hints anyone can throw me before i dig into the bearing?

No idea, but my tranny makes a noise that I believe is the input shaft bearings. Needless to say, I've got a spare tranny sitting in my garage for when it craps out.

Replacing the shaft bearings would definitely require complete disassembly, as they are on the differential:

That is correct. Drop it, split it, remove the diff and replace the bearings.

my car viberates around 75mph and at 80mph+ it gets worse, it makes weird noise too. could it be wheel bearing or shaft bearing?? does bad wheel bearing viberates too?? I can hear the noise coming from front left side, not sure from left wheel bearing or from transmission. thank you..

Is this internal shaft bearing only in the automatic tranny's??? seems very low miles for something like that to go bad so soon..HHMM??

The OP is the first person that I've heard of having it fail.

If it was a bad tranny or wheel bearing you would likely hear/feel it before the 75 MPH mark. You may simply have a tire that is out of balance.

vibration

Hey thanks CTSCOTT , The last time I saw vibrations in my front end when I got to 60-70 mph it wind up being the inner CV axle gone bad, in my VW car though. It could also be front shocks/struts or out of balance tires/wheels like stscott suggested.

+1 for what scott said you would definitely hear a growling noise form the engine at low speeds that would increase with engine speed if the bearing was bad. The slop he is probably referring too is if you grab the axle shaft closest to the transmission and pull up an down on it, there is excessive movement which could be easily misdiagnosed as a bad bearing but could simple be a failing inner cv joint.
