Things to watch out for

HI,

I have a Toyota Yaris TR 1.33

With this model and in general with Toyota what are the things to watch out for or know about?

One thing I have been told is that the Timing chain normally lasts the life of the vehicle but with high mileage cars you should do regular service and oil change to maintain health of chain.

For example on Citroens I have heard their clutches can be problematic. On some other cars they are known to have easy wearing suspension.

Water pumps is a common thing on Toyota's. I had mine done around 70k.

Keep an eye on your oil, a lot of Toyota engines burn it. Toyota claim its not a problem if its under a litre every 1000 miles or so. I've never actually heard of a Toyota chain going bad.

Toyota suspension components are pretty good. Mine are all original after 11 years/130,000 miles. The clutches normally last 100,000+ miles. There are people on here who have got 400,000 miles out of these cars.

The MAF sensor went bad on my sons 2000 ECHO at around 160k miles and 11 years. Same part as on your Yaris.

Im not sure that qualifies as a "problem" though.

I think CR identifies the MAF sensor as something that fails on these cars though.

Just being curious, do you know how often he cleaned it? I clean my MAF sensor whenever I change the oil since it only takes 5 minutes. Just wondering if this will, along with maintaining performance, if it will increase longevity of the part.

We tried cleaning it after codes were thrown but not before that. Cleaning didn't fix it. However NAPA sold us a rebuilt one or $90 which is four years old now.

My Yaris S is 18 years old and i have just had new rear springs and anti roll bar bushes and new wheel bearings, next on the to do list is the petrol tank as on my model its steel ( or should i say rust ) but for her age and milage ( 155,000 ) shes still got it! in any case she is as faithful as a dog and will never let you down.

thanks for the reply, i have had it since it was 2 months old with 25 miles on it so 10 months in total, you think that is a normal noise then? the churning chain like noise?

its going for its first service in two weeks at the dealers

is your yaris as loud as mine then?

thanks
