Wheel rust problem, any easy solution?

Hey everyone,

I just took over this car from a family member and am thinking this could be an issue that needs addressing.

The wheels seem to be rusting pretty badly.

Are there any solutions to those with the same problem? I don't have many tools at home either.

I'm prepared to spend some money if it will keep the problem from getting worse and affecting other parts of the car.

Thanks

Mate, go to your nearest Supercheap Auto buy a wire brush and a can of gloss black spray paint. All up should be under $10. Give the wheels a good brush, clean the dust off and then spray them.
It does not look to be a problem that is going to affect the rest of the car. It may even be just an accumulation of brake dust.
easy peasey fix - bobs your uncle.

^+1. Steel brush then wet sand with 600 spray some primer first if you want then the black paint. Either way it should solve the problem.

If you want it to last, after the wire brush and sandpaper, wipe it down with denatured alcohol (to remove any oily residue) and use a good primer before painting.

The above two posters are correct - forgot to add the primer. My apologies.

Just another question, will I need to remove the wheel to undertake the maintenance? Any general thoughts as well on actually doing the work? Will be the first time I do something like this.

Thanks again

It is best done off the car to avoid getting paint where it should not be.

Also, when painting you can mask the tire with masking tape. Another way to avoid painting the rubber is to use a cylinder of thin metal that fits around the outer edge of the rim. I use 6" wide aluminum flashing to do so when I paint wheels with the rubber still on.
