Sounds a little to good to be true. What exactly would acetone do to your motor over an extended period of time?

All the suggestions up until Acetone are common sense. I am shore that they work to some degree. If Acetone was the answer we would have heard about it long before now. The only thing I can see it doing is breaking down any lubricants in the crankcase through combustion contamination.

Yup. Excessive amounts will eat thru rubber hoses and gas tank linings. What Acetone, MTBE, Methyl Alcohol etc.. do is increase octane.

So, is that a main ingredient in off the shelf octane boosters?

Most of them, yeah. They mainly use Toluene and MTBE.

If it was a secret that oil companies didn't want us to know, then wouldn't mechanics, etc have worked it out? And the other 99+% of the population NOT in an oil company? Unfortunately the acetone thing will probably not change your mpg, but rather root your warranty. :(
